COVID-19 cases in India: The active caseload stands at 75,841. (File)
New Delhi: India reported 6,358 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, according to the health ministry, pushing its active caseload to 75,456. Omicron cases have risen to 653 and at least 186 have recovered, the health ministry said yesterday.
Delhi reported 331 new Covid cases, one death, and 144 recoveries in the last 24 hours, with its active caseload standing at 1,289. The city has recorded the most cases of Omicron in the country (142), followed by Maharashtra (141), Kerala (57), Gujarat (49) and 43 (Rajasthan), the health ministry said in a bulletin.
The national capital has activated the graded action plan prepared earlier this year to tackle surges in infections. It brough back night curfews yesterday.

COVID-19 India News: No Night Curfew In Goa Yet, Says Chief MinisterGoa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said that no decision on night curfew has been taken yet but assured of taking strict action if COVID-19 cases continue to increase. "No decision on night curfew yet. The positivity rate of COVID-19 has increased. However, we need to take a strict decision if the number of COVID19 cases continue to increase," the Chief Minister told news agency ANI. He further said the state government will observe the COVID-19 situation till January 1.
Goa currently has 535 active cases and reported 112 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours.
COVID-19 India News: Assam Reports 120 New Covid Cases, 2 More Deaths
Assam on Tuesday registered 120 new COVID-19 cases, 17 more than the previous day, with the tally rising to 6,20,357, a National Health Mission (NHM) bulletin said, according to news agency PTI. The death count rose to 6,160 as two more persons from Cachar and Dibrugarh died to the disease, it said. At least 1,347 COVID patients have died due to other reasons in the state so far, according to the bulletin. At least 68 people were cured of the disease during the day, taking the total number of recoveries to 6,12,059. Assam now has 791 active cases, up from 741 on the previous day.
Chennai Police Advises People Against Crowding In The New YearPeople should not congregate in public places, including on beaches, to celebrate the eve of new year on December 31 and events in resorts, farmhouses and clubs are also disallowed, Chennai city police said on Tuesday.
Citing the Tamil Nadu government advisory against crowding as coronavirus, including its Omicron strain, may spread, city Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal advised people against crowding to ring in 2022.
Netherlands Says Omicron Now Dominant StrainOmicron has become the dominant coronavirus variant in the Netherlands, the public health agency said Tuesday, warning of increased hospital admissions, reported AFP.

143 Crore Covid Vaccine Doses Administered In Country: GovernmentThe cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country reached 143 crore on Tuesday, the Union health ministry said.
More than 57 lakh (57,76,358) vaccine doses have been administered till 7 pm.
The daily vaccination tally is expected to increase with the compilation of the final reports for the day by late night, the ministry said.
75 Cases Of Omicron Variant In Pakistan So FarPakistan's National Institute of Health (NIH) on Tuesday said that a total of 75 cases of COVID-19 Omicron variant have been confirmed in the country so far.
In a statement, the NIH said that the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination (NHSRC), the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) and the provincial departments were vigilantly keeping an eye on Omicron cases in Pakistan ever since it was designated a variant of concern by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dawn reported.
7 More Omicron Cases In Kerala Take Tally To 64With seven more people testing positive for Omicron in Kerala, the total number of infections by the new variant of COVID-19 in the state has reached 64, the Health Department said on Tuesday.
Of the seven cases, four were detected in Pathanamthitta, two in Alappuzha and one in Thiruvananthapuram, the department said in a release.

18 Fully Vaccinated Students Of Maharashtra Medical College Test Covid Positive At least 18 female MBBS students of the Government Medical College at Miraj in Maharashtra's Sangli district have contracted coronavirus infection, a senior official said on Tuesday.
The infected students were fully vaccinated, he said.
"All students are largely asymptomatic and stable. As a precaution they have been admitted to the hospital attached to the college," said Dean Dr Sudhir Nanandkar.
"The infection was reported in one section of the hostel as students used to gather for meals in the mess," he said.

Dr Pramod Gautam, the genome analyst at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences or ILBS said, "Omicron cases are increasing without a doubt. Two weeks ago some 2-3 per cent of the samples we sequenced were positive for Omicron, but now 25-30% of cases are Omicron."
He, however, added that the increase in percentage may also be due to more rigorous sequencing, since the labs were only sequencing international travellers initially.
The ILBS is currently running genome analysis for every positive sample from South Delhi district. The lab also analyses a chunk of positive samples from four other districts.
Hong Kong To Tighten Air Crew Quarantine Rules Amid Omicron ThreatHong Kong health authorities said on Tuesday the city would tighten quarantine rules for air cargo crew to tackle the growing threat of the Omicron coronavirus variant, reported Reuters.
The global financial hub has identified several dozen Omicron infections via regular testing during quarantine but neither Omicron, nor other variants, have spread into the community in recent months.
But some of the new infections with Omicron were detected among air crew, who had only been required to quarantine at home, unlike most other people returning to the city, who have to quarantine in hotels.
The new measures require that returning air cargo crew spend three days in hotel quarantine before a period of home isolation. Most recent infections of air crew staff have been discovered in the first three days.
Coronavirus LIVE Updates: Puducherry Logs 9 New Covid CasesPuducherry clocked nine fresh COVID-19 cases during the last 24 hours taking the overall tally to 1,29,434 on Tuesday. No fresh fatality was reported from any of the four regions for the ninth straight day and the death count remained at 1,880.
The nine new cases were identified at the end of the examination of 2,265 samples and were spread over Puducherry (two), Karaikal (four) and Mahe (three). Yanam region, an enclave in Andhra Pradesh did not report any fresh case of infection in the last 24 hours.
India's Vaccination Coverage Crosses 142.47 CroreWith the administration of 72.87 lakh (72,87,547) vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 142.47 crore crore (1,42,46,81,736) as per provisional reports till 7 am on Tuesday.
According to Union Ministry of Health, India's recovery rate stands at 98.40 per cent, the highest since March 2020.
Sustained and collaborative efforts by the Centre and the States/UTs continue the trend of less than 15,000 daily new cases that are being reported for the last 61 days now.

The single-day COVID-19 positivity rate is 10.27 per cent in Mizoram. With the 184 new cases, the tally of positive coronavirus cases in the state has gone up to 1,40,748 with 1,435 active cases.
