New Delhi:

India's COVID-19 caseload rose to  1,02,07,871 with 20,021 infections being reported in a day, while recoveries have surged to 97.82 lakh, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday.

The death count increased to 1,47,901 with 279 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 97,82,669 pushing the national recovery rate to 95.83 per cent, while the COVID-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.45 per cent.

The COVID-19 active caseload remained below 3 lakh for the seventh consecutive day.
There are 2,77,301 active coronavirus infections in the country which  comprises 2.72 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.

Meanwhile, a two-day dry run for coronavirus vaccine program starts today in Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat and Assam. All the four states will report their observations to the centre recorded during the program. The government plans to cover 30 crore people in the first phase when it rolls out a vaccine.

A 52-year-old woman, who returned to Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh from the United Kingdom
on December 12, has tested positive for coronavirus, an official said on Monday. The woman's swab samples have been sent to Delhi for further examination to check if she has been infected by a new strain recently detected in the UK, Jabalpur Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr R Kurariya said.

Coronavirus LIVE Updates: Odisha unable to trace 62 UK returnees

The Odisha government on Monday said that as many as 62 returnees from the United Kingdom are untraceable despite the administration's request for cooperation to keep a tab on the new coronavirus strain.

As many as 181 passengers have returned to Odisha from the UK between November 30 and December 21. Of them, 62 are untraceable, Director of Public Health, Dr Niranjan Mishra, said.

Eight elderly workers at a German care home were mistakenly injected with five times the recommended dose of the Pfizer/Biontech vaccine, local authorities said Monday.

The incident happened on Sunday in the northeastern city of Stralsund in the Vorpommern-Ruegen district. District chief Stefan Kerth said in a statement that he regretted the mishap, ANi reported.

As many as 1,614 more people have been cured of the disease, taking the recovery rate among the coronavirus patients in the state to 95.85 per cent, it said.

North 24 Parganas district reported the highest number of new cases at 268, followed by Kolkata (200) and Howrah (71), the bulletin said.

North 24 Parganas also reported the highest number of fresh fatalities at seven, followed by four each in Kolkata and South 24 Parganas, it said.

Chattisgarh sees 1,188 COVID-19 cases, 26 deaths; 1,661 recover
Chhattisgarh's COVID-19 tally reached 2,76,337 on Monday after 1,188 cases were detected,
while 26 deaths took the count to 3,319, a health official said.

The number of people who have recovered reached 2,60,056 after 98 people were discharged from hospitals and 1,563 completed home isolation, leaving the state with 12,962 active cases, he added.

"Raipur reported 191 new cases, taking its total count to 52,126, including 709 deaths. Durg saw 112 cases, Bilaspur 86, Korba 76, Raigarh 75 and Balod 65. Of the 26 deaths, eight took place on Monday, 12 on Saturday and six earlier," he added.

Gautam Buddh Nagar records 27 new COVID-19 cases, tally 24,845
Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar recorded 27 new COVID-19 cases on Monday that pushed the district's infection tally to 24,845, official data showed.

Active cases in the district came down to 462 from 477 the previous day, as the recovery rate rose to 97.78 per cent, according to the data released by the UP Health Department for a 24-hour period.

The number of active cases in Gautam Buddh Nagar is the seventh highest in the state.

On the brighter side, 42 more patients got discharged during the period, taking the overall recoveries to 24,294, the fifth highest in the state.

The death toll in Gautam Buddh Nagar has reached 89 and the mortality rate is 0.35 per cent. The recovery rate of patients reached 97.78 per cent, the statistics showed.

Meanwhile, the number of active COVID-19 cases in UP came down to 14,710 from 15,371 on Sunday while the overall recoveries reached 5,59,888 and the death toll climbed to 8,322 on Monday, the data showed.

10 regional laboratories identified for genome sequencing to detect new coronavirus variant
Ten regional laboratories have been identified by the Centre where states will send five per cent of their COVID-19 positive samples for genome sequencing to detect the new coronavirus variant that has emerged in the United Kingdom recently.

The health ministry has also established the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) for laboratory and epidemiological surveillance and expand whole genome sequencing of the coronavirus in the country, aiding in the understanding of how the virus spreads and evolves.

The emergence of the new coronavirus strain in the UK has required India to increase viral genomic surveillance in order to understand the spread of the virus in a rapid and robust manner.

"The 10 regional genome sequencing laboratories spread across the country will cater to the nearest states, which will send five per cent of the positive samples to these labs for genome sequencing," stated the Union Health Ministry's guidance document on genomic sequencing released on Monday.

The viral genome sequencing data generated will be analysed by the respective centres and sent to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Delhi, for collation and integration.

Gujarat forms task force to oversee COVID-19 vaccine drive
The Gujarat government on Monday formed a four-member task force to oversee the mass
vaccination drive in the state once a vaccine against COVID-19 is made available for inoculation.

The task force, set up by the Health and Family Welfare Department, consists of renowned pediatricians Dr Naveen Thacker and Dr Nishchal Bhatt, immunology expert Dr Sapan Pandya and Dr Bhadresh Vyas of Jamnagar Medical College and Hospital, said a government release.

Addressing their first press conference, the task force members urged people not to worry about vaccine and discard rumours which claim that the potential shot will
change their DNA.

Seven out of 227 people from England test positive for COVID-19 in Uttarakhand
Seven of the 227 people, who came to Uttarakhand from England earlier this month before flight operations from that country were suspended, have tested positive for COVID-19.

Five of them are in Dehradun district and one each is in Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts, an official at the State Health Directorate said.

All the 227 people arrived in the state from England between December 9 and December 23, when India decided to suspend flights to and from that country amid fears of a new and more infectious variant of the coronavirus being found there.

Telangana: One more UK returnee tests positive
One more person who arrived from the UK has been found positive, taking the total number of UK-returnees who tested positive for the coronavirus infection to 21 since December 9.

Observing that the Telangana health department is alert in the wake of new strain of coronavirus surfacing, state Director of Public Health G Srinivasa Rao said government is following a policy of tracing, testing and treating to prevent the spread of the virus, according to an official release on Monday.

Maharashtra reports 2,498 COVID-19 cases, 4,501 recoveries; 50 die
Maharashtra's COVID-19 tally rose to 19,22,048 on Monday with the addition of 2,498 new cases, while 50 fresh deaths pushed the count to 49,305, the state health department said.

A health department official said 4,501 patients were discharged during the day, taking the number of recoveries to 18,14,449.

There are now 57,159 active cases in the state, he said.

So far, 1,25,43,772 people have been tested for coronavirus in Maharashtra, of which 41,218 were examined on Monday, the official added.

Nagpur sees 335 COVID-19 cases, 7 deaths, 576 recoveries
The number of COVID-19 cases in Nagpur rose by 335 to reach 1,22,649 on Monday, while the
death toll touched 3,907 after seven patients succumbed to the infection, an official said.

The number of people who have been discharged stands at 1,14,926, including 576 on Monday, leaving the district with 3,816 active cases, he said.

With 3,272 samples tested on Monday, the overall number of tests conducted in the district went up to 9,15,910.

Gujarat records 810 COVID-19 cases, 1,016 recoveries; 6 die
Gujarat reported 810 new coronavirus cases on Monday, takingits COVID-19 tally to 2,42,655, the state health department said.

With six new fatalities, the state''s COVID-19 death count rose to 4,288, it said.

The number of recovered cases rose to 2,28,144, after 1,016 more patients were discharged from hospitals, said the department in a release.

With this, the state's recovery rate increased to 94.02 per cent, it said.

US airports screen record number of travellers over holiday despite COVID-19 warnings
US airports screened a record number of passengers over the Christmas holiday weekend despite warnings from top health officials about the risk of travelling amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) spokesperson Lisa Farbstein said on Monday.

"TSA screened 1,284,599 people at airport checkpoints nationwide yesterday, Sunday, Dec. 27," Farbstein said via Twitter. "It is the highest checkpoint throughput since the pandemic hit. It is also the 6th day in the last 10 that volume has surpassed 1M. If you choose to travel, please wear a mask."

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had previously urged Americans not to travel during the Christmas holiday, warning of an "exponential" increase in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths across the country.

Health officials in the United States have documented more than 19.1 million cases of COVID-19 since January, data compiled by Johns Hopkins University (JHU) showed on Monday.

Compulsory COVID-19 tests for all who entered Nagaland after Dec 20
In the wake of the emergence of a mutated strain of the virus in the UK, all persons who have
come to Nagaland after December 20 have been asked to report to their district-level coronavirus task forces for compulsory COVID-19 testing, a senior health official said on Monday.

"Those arriving after the issuance of this circular are to self declare at the point of entry, inform their respective district task forces and self isolate themselves for standard testing protocols," Principal Director of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Vizolie Z. Suokhrie, said in a press
