Coronavirus India Highlights: Mumbai Records 7,895 New Cases, 25% Lower Than Yesterday

The number of new cases reported are marginally higher than the 2.68 lakh daily cases reported yesterday.

India reported 2,71,202 fresh COVID-19 infections, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare today, taking the total case tally in the country to 3,71,22,164.

The new cases reported are marginally higher than the 2.68 lakh daily cases reported yesterday. A total of 7,743 Omicron cases are amongst all Covid cases reported in India so far.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 16.28 per cent -- slightly down from 16.66 per cent yesterday -- while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 13.69 per cent.

India's COVID-19 vaccination coverage has crossed 156 crore with more than 57 lakh vaccine doses administered on Saturday, the Union health ministry said. The daily vaccination tally is expected to increase with the compilation of the final reports for the day by late night.

Cumulatively, 52,40,53,061 first doses have been administered to individuals in the 18-44 age group across states and union territories and 36,73,83,765 second doses have been given since the start of phase-3 of the vaccination drive, according to health ministry data. 

In the 15-18 age group, 3,36,09,191 vaccine doses have been administered, the ministry said.

West Bengal reports 14,938 new COVID-19 cases

West Bengal's COVID-19 tally climbed to 18,97,699 on Sunday with 14,938 fresh cases, while 36 more fatalities pushed the deaths to 20,088, a health department bulletin said. 

The state had registered 19,064 new infections and 39 deaths on Saturday.

Its positivity rate stood at 27.73 per cent, the bulletin said.

Kolkata registered the highest number of fresh fatalities at 12, followed by five in neighbouring North 24 Parganas district and four in Howrah. The state capital logged 3,893 single-day cases.

West Bengal now has 1,60,305 active cases, and 17,17,306 people have recovered from the disease, including 9,973 since Saturday.

The state has tested over 2.23 crore samples so far, taking into account 53,876 such clinical examinations in the past 24 hours, down from 64,572 samples the previous day, the bulletin added.

Assam logs 2,709 fresh COVID-19 cases, five more deaths

Assam logged 2,709 new COVID-19 positive cases on Sunday, 681 fewer than the previous day, taking the overall caseload to 6,46,735, a National Health Mission (NHM) bulletin said. 

Five persons lost their lives due to the disease during the day, taking the total number of deaths to 6,206. The fresh fatalities were reported from Jorhat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Morigaon, and Nalbari districts.

As many as 3,390 coronavirus cases were reported on Saturday.

Kamrup Metropolitan, which primarily comprises Guwahati city, reported the highest number of cases in the state with 912 infections, a slight decrease from 919 cases on Saturday.

Among other districts, Jorhat logged 257 cases, Dibrugarh 180 and Cachar 159.

The deaths have increased to 6,206, while the number of COVID-19 patients dying due to reasons remained at 1,347.

At 7,895, Mumbai Records Dip In New Covid Cases

After logging over 10,000 COVID-19 cases per day for the last 11 days, the daily tally in Mumbai dropped to 7,895 on Sunday. A total of 11 people died of the COVID-19 infection, the city civic body said in a bulletin.

The caseload in Mumbai now stands at 9,99,862 and the death count at 16,457, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in a release.

A total of 21,025 patients were discharged, taking the total number of recoveries in the financial capital to 9,20,383.

Beijing Closes Temples Due To Omicron Case Weeks Before Winter Olympics
China on Sunday reported 65 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases for Jan. 15, including the first Omicron case in Beijing, just weeks from the February 4 start of the city's Winter Olympic Games and the country's Lunar New Year holiday.

That was down from 104 comparable cases a day earlier, as the outbreak in the northwestern city of Xian winds down after strict lockdowns. But the highly transmissible Omicron variant has been detected in at least five provinces and municipalities, prompting cities to impose curbs to stop its spread and threatening to further undercut slowing economic growth.

On Saturday, the capital Beijing reported the first local infection of the Omicron variant, involving a person who had visited multiple malls and restaurants in the previous 14 days.

Coronavirus Live Updates: Odisha logs 11,177 fresh Covid cases in 24 hours, 3 deaths
Odisha on Sunday recorded 11,177 new COVID-19 cases, 321 more than the previous day, with the tally rising to 11,33,912, a health department bulletin said.

The daily infections crossed the 11,000-mark for the first time since May 26 last year as 11,623 cases were registered on that day.

The death toll mounted to 8,481 as three more persons succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours, the bulletin said.

Coronavirus News: Pakistan logs over 4,000 daily COVID-19 cases for second straight day
Pakistan reported more than 4,000 COVID-19 cases for the second straight day, amid the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic, the country's National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) said on Sunday.

According to NCOC, a total of 51,236 tests were conducted in Pakistan during the last 24 hours, of which 4,027 came back positive. The country's positivity rate now stands at 7.8 per cent.

On Saturday, Pakistan has hit a new record of reporting a total of 4,286 COVID cases in the last 24 hours, the highest since August 25 last year.

Apple Retail, Corporate Employees To Provide Proof Of Covid Booster Shot: Report
Apple Inc will require retail and corporate employees to provide proof of a COVID-19 booster shot, The Verge reported on Saturday, citing an internal email.

Starting Jan. 24, unvaccinated employees or those who haven't submitted proof of vaccination will need negative COVID-19 tests to enter Apple workplaces, the report said. The Verge said it was not immediately clear if the testing requirement applies to both corporate and retail employees.

81 Mumbai police personnel, 31 of Pune police test positive for COVID-19 in last 24 hours
As many as 81 Mumbai policemen tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, informed police on Saturday. With this, the tally of positive police personnel rose to 1,312 in the city.

A total of 126 personnel have died so far from the infection, said the Mumbai police.

Also, 31 police personnel tested COVID-19 positive on Saturday in Pune. With this, the number of infected police personnel in the city rose to 465, said Pune police.

Mumbai on Saturday reported 10,661 new cases and 11 deaths. There were 73,518 active cases in the city. Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported 42,462 new cases and 23 deaths in the last 24 hours, the state health department informed on Saturday.

England opens COVID booster jab programme for 16 and 17-year olds

England's health service said it will expand its COVID-19 booster vaccination programme to include 16- and 17-year-olds from Monday.

Until now, booster jabs have been limited to 16- and 17-year-olds most at risk from the coronavirus.

"More than four in five adults in England have already been boosted, helping to protect them from severe illness," British health minister Sajid Javid said in a statement.

"We're now extending the programme to 16- and 17-year-olds so they can top-up their immunity this winter to keep themselves and their friends safe."

Since the vaccination programme rolled out to the age group in August, more than 889,700 teenagers - or seven in 10 people aged 16 and 17 - have had their first dose and more than 600,000 have had their second.
