Meanwhile, India's homegrown Covaxin, which got the WHO approval last week, has been recognised by the United Kingdom. No quarantine is required for fully vaccinated travellers in Britain as part of new rules effective from November 22.

Coronavirus Detected In Pet Dog In UK: Report
COVID-19 has been detected in a pet dog in the United Kingdom, confirmed UK's Chief Veterinary Officer in a statement on Wednesday.

According to him, the infection was confirmed following tests at the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) laboratory in Weybridge on November 3. The dog is now recovering at home.

All available evidence suggests that the dog contracted the coronavirus from its owners who had previously tested positive for coronavirus. There is no evidence to suggest that the animal was involved in the transmission of the disease to its owners or that pets or other domestic animals are able to transmit the virus to people, according to the statement.

Sputnik V Maker Calls For Mandatory Vaccination In Russia As Deaths Surge
The developer of Russia's coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V has said Moscow should make jabs mandatory as inoculation rates remain low despite record deaths and campaigning by authorities.

His call came as Russia reported a record 1,239 Covid deaths in a single day Wednesday.

Only 34 per cent of the country is fully vaccinated, even though Sputnik V -- the world's first Covid vaccine -- has been widely available since December last year.

Germany Advises Against Moderna Covid Vaccine For People Under 30
German health authorities on Wednesday advised against the use of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine for people under 30 due to evidence of a small risk of cardiac inflammation.

The Stiko vaccine commission cited studies showing that mRNA jabs led in rare cases to the conditions myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (inflammation of the tissue surrounding the heart) in younger patients, with slightly higher prevalence in those who received Moderna.

4 Lions At Singapore Zoo Test Covid Positive: Report
Four Asiatic lions at a Singapore zoo have tested positive for COVID-19 after coming in contact with infected staff, according to a news report. "All the lions remain bright, alert and are eating well," the Channel News Asia report quoted Dr Sonja Luz, vice president of conservation, research and veterinary at Mandai Wildlife Group, the zoo operator, as saying.

Meanwhile, the country also reported 3,397 fresh COVID-19 cases, including 169 from dormitories for migrant workers. With this, the total number of cases in the country has increased to 2,24,200. The Ministry of Health reported 12 deaths due to coronavirus-related complications that pushed the death count to 523.

According to the CNA report, the four Asiatic lions tested positive at the Night Safari, a popular tourist attraction. The lions had exhibited mild symptoms including coughing, sneezing and lethargy on Saturday.

No Vaccination Equals No Ration, Fuel Supply In Maharashtra's Aurangabad
The district administration in Maharashtra has asked ration shops, gas agencies and petrol pumps to supply groceries and fuel only to those citizens who have taken at least one dose of vaccine against COVID-19, officials said today.

Aurangabad ranks 26th in terms of vaccination among 36 districts in the state, they said.

About 55 per cent of the eligible people in the district have been inoculated so far, compared to 74 per cent in the state, officials said.

In an order issued on Tuesday night, Aurangabad Collector Sunil Chavan directed authorities of the fair price shops, gas agencies and petrol pumps to check the vaccination certificates of customers, an official said.

No new COVID-19 case in Andamans
The COVID-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands remained unchanged at 7,665 as no fresh infection was detected on Wednesday, a health bulletin said.

The Union territory''s coronavirus death toll also remained unchanged at 129 as no fresh fatality was registered, it said.

The archipelago now has nine active cases, while 7,527 people have been cured of the disease to date, including one on Tuesday.

COVID-19 case doubling rate improves to 3,196 days in Navi Mumbai
The doubling time of COVID-19 cases in Navi Mumbai town of Maharashtra has improved to 3,196 days as against 3,000 days a month ago, civic officials said on Wednesday.

The number of active cases also came down considerably to 308 on November 8, as compared to 11,605 on April 11 this year during the second wave of COVID-19, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Commissioner Abhijit Bangar said in a release.

During Diwali festival last week, 16 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Navi Mumbai on November 5, which was the lowest number since the outbreak of the pandemic, he said.

Pfizer Requests US Emergency Authorisation For Covid Booster For Adults
Drugmakers Pfizer and BioNTech announced Tuesday they have formally submitted a request asking US officials for emergency authorization of their Covid-19 booster vaccine for people aged 18 and older.

The move follows research published by the companies in late October indicating a third shot is 95.6 percent effective against symptomatic infection, based on clinical trials carried out on 10,000 people.

The companies asked the US Food and Drug Administration to add the new population segment, amending emergency use authorization already granted in September for a third dose for everyone aged 65 and up, as well as people at high risk of developing severe Covid-19.

Looking Forward To "Second Generation" Of Covid Vaccines: WHO Chief Scientist
The World Health Organization's chief scientist said Tuesday she was looking forward to the "second generation" of Covid-19 vaccines, which could include nasal sprays and oral versions.

Soumya Swaminathan said such vaccines could have advantages over the current crop as they would be easier to deliver than injections and could even be self-administered.

Swaminathan said there were 129 different candidate vaccines that have got as far as clinical trials -- being tested on humans -- while a further 194 are not yet that advanced in their development and are still being worked on in laboratories.

"This covers the entire range of technologies," she told a live interaction on WHO social media channels.

"They're still in development. I'm sure some of them will prove to be very safe and efficacious and others may not.
