Coronavirus India Highlights: With Over 44,000 New Cases, India's Covid Tally Breaches 86 Lakh-Mark

India Coronavirus Cases: The total recoveries have surged to 80,13,783. (File)

India's COVID-19 caseload went past 86 lakh on Wednesday, while the number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 80.13 lakh, pushing the national recovery rate to 92.79 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry's data.

With 44,281 more people testing positive for coronavirus in a span of 24 hours, the infection tally mounted to 86,36, 011, while the death count rose to 1,27,571 after 512 new fatalities were reported, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The number of active cases dropped below five lakh. At present, there are 4,94,657 active cases in the country which comprise 5.73 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.

The total recoveries have surged to 80,13,783, pushing the national recovery rate to 92.79 per cent, while COVID-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.48 per cent.

Meanwhile, the third phase of clinical trials for Covaxin, the coronavirus vaccine being developed by pharmaceutical firm Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has started. The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) registered as the first volunteer for the trails which will take place at the university's JN Medical College and Hospital (JNMCH).

Vice Chancellor Professor Tariq Mansoor on Tuesday encouraged others to participate in the trials.

"Volunteered myself for Phase III trial of COVID19 vaccine "Covaxin"- a study led by AMU in collaboration with ICMR & Bharat Biotech aimed at evaluating the safety and efficacy of this vaccine. I fervently appeal to everyone to volunteer/register for this trial and participate in this ground breaking research for developing better cures and treatment options," Professor Mansoor tweeted.

Cyprus announces local lockdowns to curb virus spike

Cyprus on Wednesday announced partial lockdowns in its virus hotspots on the Mediterranean coast and other measures in an effort to curb a spike in coronavirus cases.

The resort towns of Limassol and Paphos on the south coast are to go into partial lockdown from Thursday until the end of November.

Health Minister said that travel into or out of the towns would be banned, and a curfew in force from 8 pm to 5 am.

Odisha reports 1,220 new COVID-19 cases, 15 fresh fatalities

Odisha's COVID-19 tally rose to 3,05,000 on Wednesday as 1,220 more people tested positive for the infection, a health official said. Fifteen fresh fatalities pushed the coronavirus deaths in the state to 1,469, he said. 

At least 1,340 more patients were cured of the disease during the day, taking the total number of recoveries to 2,92,477, which is 95.89 per cent of the state''s caseload, the official said.

West Bengal logs record recovery of 4,431 COVID patients

West Bengal on Wednesday reported the highest single-day recovery of 4,431 COVID-19 patients, taking the total number of cured people to 3,76,696, the health department said in a bulletin. The discharge rate is now 90.34 per cent. The deaths rose to 7,452 after 49 more people died due to the disease.

7,007 new COVID-19 cases in Kerala

Kerala on Wednesday reported 7,007 new cases of COVID-19 and the total count of cases in the state has crossed five lakh mark.

According to the state government, the total count of cases is 5,02,220.

It said 64,192 samples were tested during the last 24 hours. Of the cases detected, 6,152 were caused by local transmission and the contact source of infection was not traceable in 717 cases. There were 52 medical staffers among those infected.

Coronavirus news: Russia set to start post-registration trials for second COVID-19 shot

Russia's Sputnik V vaccine is 92% effective at protecting people from COVID-19 according to interim trial results, the country's sovereign wealth fund said on Wednesday, as Moscow rushes to keep pace with Western drugmakers in the race for a shot.

Russia's results are only the second from a late-stage human trial, following on swiftly from data released on Monday by Pfizer Inc and BioNTech, which said their shot was also more than 90% effective, Reuters reported.

Coronavirus news: Spain to demand negative PCR test for travellers arriving from high-risk countries

Spain will demand a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours for all travellers arriving from countries with a high risk of contracting the coronavirus from Nov. 23, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

One of Europe's main COVID-19 hotspots, Spain had increasingly become an exception in the region for its policy of - so far - not asking visitors to provide a PCR test on arrival.

Spain will use European Union criteria to define which countries are classified as high-risk, Reuters reported.

Coronavirus news: Swiss boost COVID-19 vaccine reservations with shots from Pfizer, WHO-led programme

Switzerland has reserved 16 million doses of potential COVID-19 vaccines, the government said on Wednesday, announcing a new 3.2 million-dose reservation with a World Health Organization-led programme and a tentative 3 million-dose pact with Pfizer and BioNTech.

Switzerland, which has 8.6 million people and hopes to start vaccinating some time in the first half of 2021, had previously reserved nearly 10 million doses of prospective vaccines from Moderna and AstraZeneca and has now set aside 400 million Swiss francs ($435.92 million) for purchases.

Pfizer and BioNTech said on Monday their COVID-19 vaccine was more than 90% effective based on initial trial results, prompting governments to rush to secure a share. Data from separate trials of Moderna's and AstraZeneca's candidates are due later this year.

A Russian vaccine project on Wednesday also said that its candidate's efficacy topped 90% in a small sampling of trial participants, Reuters reported.

Coronavirus news: UK COVID-19 deaths pass 50,000

More than 50,000 people who tested positive for coronavirus in Britain have now died, official figures showed Wednesday, with another 595 fatalities recorded in the last 24 hours,  AFP reported. 

Britain's death count now stands at 50,365, the highest in Europe, with another 22,950 testing positive for the disease over the last day, according to government data.

Coronavirus news: Gibraltar suffers first virus death

An elderly woman living in a care home has become the first person to die of Covid-19 in Gibraltar, the government said on Wednesday. 

The woman, who was in her early 90s, died of pneumonia after contracting the virus which has so far affected 842 people in this tiny British enclave on the southernmost tip of Spain.

In the past 24 hours, 28 new cases have been diagnosed, and there are 10 virus patients in hospital, including one in intensive care. 

The ERS care homes network, which has counted five infections, has been placed on indefinite lockdown, AFP reported.

Coronavirus news: Even with vaccine, recovery may be "unsteady", says Christine Lagarde

European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde on Wednesday warned of an "unsteady" eurozone recovery from the pandemic despite "encouraging" news about a vaccine, AFP reported.

"We could still face recurring cycles of accelerating viral spread and tightening restrictions until widespread immunity is achieved," Lagarde told a virtual forum on central banking, a day after Pfizer and BioNTech said their Covid-19 vaccine had shown 90 per cent effectiveness in trials.

Coronavirus news: Moderna On Track To Report COVID-19 Vaccine Data Later This Month

Moderna Inc said on Wednesday it was on track to report early data from a late-stage trial of its experimental coronavirus vaccine later this month, and could file for US emergency use authorization in early December.

The company may have to wait for a two-month follow up safety data to apply for US emergency use authorization, even after reporting positive interim data on the vaccine's effectiveness.

Moderna said it expects the safety data in the second half of this month, Reuters reported.

Coronavirus news: Brazil allows trials of Chinese vaccine to resume

Brazil's national health regulator allowed clinical trials of a Chinese-developed Covid-19 vaccine to resume Wednesday, two days after suspending them in what critics called a decision tainted by politics.

The regulatory agency, Anvisa, said it had now received more details on the nature of the "adverse incident" that led it to halt trials of the CoronaVac vaccine, and had "sufficient information to allow vaccination to resume."

Far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, who has criticized the vaccine "from that other country," had claimed the suspension as a victory. However, public health officials said the "adverse incident" that led to the suspension -- a volunteer recipient's death, which police are investigating as a suicide -- had no connection with the vaccine, AFP reported.

Coronavirus news: 129 more test COVID-19 positive in Ladakh
The COVID-19 tally in Ladakh surpassed the 7,000-mark on Wednesday with 129 more people testing positive for the infection, according to an official bulletin.

The fresh cases pushed the infection count to 7,063 in the Union Territory, the bulletin said.

The death count linked to the pandemic stands at 85 in Ladakh, while 6,058 patients have so far recovered from the infection in the UT, PTI reported.

Kerala reported 7,007 new COVID-19 cases and 29 more deaths on Wednesday, taking the total infections to 5,02,719 and the count to 1,771. As many as 7,252 people were cured of the infection, taking the total recoveries in the state to 4,22,410, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: Delhi High Court pulls up AAP government for relaxing norms as COVID-19 cases spike in Delhi

The Delhi High Court Wednesday pulled up the AAP government for relaxing norms for public movement and gatherings even as COVID-19 cases were increasing with no household "left untouched", and sought to know if it had any policy or strategy in place to deal with the "alarming" situation.

A bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Subramanium Prasad said that when Delhi, as city state, was "hands down beating" Maharashtra and Kerala in the number of daily new cases in the past two weeks, what concrete steps have been taken by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to contain the spread of infection.

The court noted that the daily number of new COVID-19 cases received for November 10 was at 8,593 and "still counting" and the number of containment zones in the city were 4,016, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: Cuba reopens Havana airport ahead of tourism high season

Havana airport will open to regular commercial flights on Sunday after being closed for seven and a half months due to the coronavirus pandemic, Cuban state-run media said late on Tuesday citing Cuba's Institute of Civil Aeronautics.

The move comes on time for what is traditionally the Caribbean island nation's high tourist season from November to March although the pandemic is expected to reduce the flow of visitors.

The tourism sector is one of the top hard currency income earners in cash-strapped Cuba which already opened most of the country last month to travelers, Reuters reported.
