Covid cases in India: Four southern states are reporting high number of daily cases. (File)

India reported 44,643 fresh COVID-19 cases on Friday, which was a four per cent increase in the number of cases from Thursday. The country also reported 464 virus-related deaths during the last 24 hours.

Daily test positivity rate - number of positive cases identified per 100 - stands at 2.72 per cent. Recovery rate is at 97.36 per cent.

Kerala, which remains a concern with most number of Covid cases in a day, reported 22,040 cases. It also reported 117 deaths.

Andhra Pradesh with 2,145 Covid cases, Tamil Nadu with 1,997, Karnataka with 1,785 are other southern states with high number of daily cases. Telangana reported 582 cases in a day.

Coronavirus News: 3 Covid Vaccine Centres Illegally Charging Registration Fee, Claims Assam MLA
Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha today alleged in the Assam assembly that three Covid vaccination centres in the state's Karimganj district are illegally charging Rs 5 as registration fee for the jabs, prompting the government to announce to conduct an enquiry, reported news agency PTI.

Raising the issue during the Question Hour, in Assam Assembly, Ms Purkayastha tabled an official letter written by the additional chief medical and health officer of the district flagging the matter.

"The additional chief medical and health officer wrote in his letter that three vaccine centres are charging Rs 5 as registration fees. This is a huge irregularity as the vaccines are meant to be given free," he added.

Coronavirus News: 3.56 Crore Vaccines Procured By Private Hospitals Till August 2, Says Centre
A total of 3.56 crore Covid vaccines have been procured by private hospitals till August 2 and the doses once procured by them are not re-allocated to government vaccination centres, the Lok Sabha was informed today, reported news agency PTI.

Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar, in a written reply, said the demand for Covid vaccines from private hospitals is aggregated on Co-WIN portal, and the Centre, through which, facilitates the sourcing of these vaccines by private hospitals in coordination with state governments and vaccine manufacturers.

"The private hospitals, accordingly, prepare and publish the schedule of vaccination on Co-WIN portal as per the availability of vaccines with them.

"As on August 2, 2021, a total of 3.56 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been procured by private hospitals. The COVID-19 vaccines once procured by private hospitals are not re-allocated to government vaccination centres," she said.

Coronavirus News: Over 2.30 Crore Unutilised Vaccine Doses Available With States, Union Territories, Private Hospitals, Says Centre
Over 2.30 crore balance and unutilised Covid vaccine doses are still available with states, Union Territories (UTs) and private hospitals which are yet to be administered, the Health Ministry said today, reported news agency PTI.

More than 51.16 crore vaccine doses have been provided to states and UTs so far through all sources and 20,49,220 jabs are in the pipeline, it said.

The total consumption, including wastage, is 49,19,73,961 doses according to data available at 8 am.

Coronavirus News: India Reported 83 Cases Of Delta Plus Variant Till August 4, Says Centre
Eighty three cases of Delta plus variant of coronavirus have been reported in India till August 4 with Maharashtra registering 33 of these cases, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 11 and Tamil Nadu 10, the Lok Sabha was informed today, reported news agency PTI.

Responding to a question on whether private laboratories are permitted to do genome sequencing of coronavirus, Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar in a written reply said inclusion of private labs in Indian INSACOG (SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Consortium) is under consideration.

"Few labs have submitted their willingness to be part of INSACOG. Their inclusion will be decided based on capacity assessment with respect to their human resources and infrastructure," she said in her reply.

Coronavirus News: Odisha Universities, Colleges To Reopen On August 16
Universities and colleges in Odisha, closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, will reopen for physical classes from August 16, reported news agency PTI.

Classes will resume for first year postgraduate and pre-final year undergraduate students, the higher education department tweeted.

"Universities and Colleges (under Higher Education Dept) will open for physical classroom teaching (and for hostel accommodation) from 16.08.21 for PG First Year and UG Pre-Final Year students," the tweet said.

The levels of IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 remain stable, or even increase, seven months after infection, according to a study of healthcare workers published in the journal Nature Communications today, reported news agency PTI.
