New Delhi:

The current doubling rate of COVID-19 in the national capital is 14 days, so as per that estimation it will see over 56,000 cases by the end of next two weeks, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said on Monday.

The number of coronavirus cases in the national capital crossed the 28,000-mark with 1,282 fresh infections, while the number of deaths climbed to 812 on Sunday. "The expert committee, which was set up by us earlier, has said that the doubling rate is 14-15 days and currently the city has recorded 28,936 cases in total so by the end of two weeks, it is estimated to rise to 56,000," the minister told reporters.

Barring June 1, when Delhi saw a spike of 990 cases, it has been recording over 1,000 fresh cases every day from May 28 to June 7, the highest being 1,513 on June 3.

Coronavirus cases in India crossed 2.56 lakh cases on Monday amid increasing relaxations allowed by the government following an over two-month nationwide lockdown. Over 7,135 people have died so far in the country.

This is the biggest single-day jump in cases as the country recorded over 9,000 cases for the sixth consecutive day. India is the also the fifth worst-hit nation by the deadly virus in the world.

Shopping malls, religious places, hotels and restaurants are re-opening in most states today as part of what it called "Unlock1", more than two months after they were closed to check the spread of the coronavirus.

The Home Ministry had last month said "Unlock1" will roll out across the country from today under which the nationwide lockdown which came into effect from March 25 will be relaxed to a great extent, including opening of shopping malls, restaurants and religious places, though strict restrictions will remain in place till June 30 in the worst-hit areas.

Brazil accused of manipulating coronavirus count

Critics are accusing President Jair Bolsonaro of manipulating the figures showing the spiralling coronavirus death toll in Brazil, after his government first stopped reporting the total number of fatalities and infections, and then released contradictory data.

Even as the situation has gotten worse in Brazil, the latest epicenter in the pandemic, the health ministry has made a series of unusual moves on how it presents the numbers on COVID-19.

The ministry had been the official and most widely used source for nationwide virus statistics, which paint a grim picture of its impact on Brazil: 36,455 deaths, the third-highest toll in the world, after the United States and Britain; and 691,758 infections, the second-highest caseload, after the US.
