COVID-19 Cases India Highlights: India's recovery rate is 83.01 per cent.

New Delhi:

With 70,589 new patients, the coronavius cases in India crossed 61 lakh-mark on Tuesday, data from the health ministry showed. The death count from the highly contagious virus climbed to 96,318 with 776 more fatalities.

The number of recoveries reported in the past 24 hours is around 84,877, taking the total number of people who have fought off the virus past 51 lakh.

India is the second worst-affected country by the Covid pandemic, second only to the United States in the total number of active cases.

Odisha to launch month-long COVID-19 awareness drive from October 2

Biju Janata Dal (BJD) will launch a month-long campaign from Gandhi Jayanti for sensitising people in Odisha on the use of masks, hand washing, social distancing and following COVID-19 guidelines.

The BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has written to party office bearers and organisational heads, all MPs, MLAs, district presidents and observers to launch a campaign from October 2 to November 2 and distribute face masks at panchayat level and sensitise the people about COVID-19 guidelines.

New York City imposes mask fines up to $1,000

New York City on Tuesday said it would fine anyone caught in public without a mask.

More than 205,000 people have died in the United States and nearly 7.2 million people have been infected since the pandemic began, according to a Reuters tally.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city will fine people up to $1,000 for refusing to wear a mask in public, as the rate of positive tests for the novel coronavirus climbed above 3% for the first time in months.

World Bank seeks board approval for $12 billion vaccine financing plan: Report

World Bank President David Malpass said on Tuesday he is seeking board approval for a $12 billion coronavirus vaccine financing plan to help poor and developing countries secure a sufficient share of vaccine doses when they become available in the coming months.

Malpass told Reuters in an exclusive interview that the initiative, part of $160 billion in coronavirus aid financing pledged by the multilateral lender, is aimed at helping countries procure and distribute vaccines early to health care and other essential workers and expand global production. He said the board was expected to consider the plan in early October.

Karnataka reports 10,453 new COVID-19 cases

Karnataka reported 10,453 new COVID-19 cases and 136 deaths on Tuesday, said the state health department.

With the new cases, the total cases have risen to 5,92,91, including 4,76,378 discharges and 8,777 deaths. The number of active cases stands at 1,07,737, it said.

Maharashtra minister criticises private hospitals, diagnostic units

Maharashtra minister for public health and family welfare Rajesh Tope on Tuesday said private hospitals and diagnostic centres have taken undue advantage of the COVID-19 situation in the state.

Mr Tope said there have been instances of these private facilities overcharging people for their services.

"Private hospitals and diagnostic centres have taken undue advantage of the COVID-19 situation in the state. There have been several occasions where these centres and hospitals have charged exorbitantly for basic health services during the COVID-19 situation," he said.

Jump in positive COVID-19 tests causes alarm in New York

New York's daily rate of positive coronavirus tests climbed to 3.25 percent over the last 24 hours, with a sharp increase in cases among Orthodox Jewish communities, authorities said Tuesday.

The elevated rate, which was at 1.93 percent just the day before, marks a worrisome step for a city that has made drastic progress in fighting the coronavirus.

New York City, where more than 23,800 people have died of coronavirus, became the global epicenter of the pandemic in spring but has recently touted some of the lowest test positivity rates and infection rates among major US cities.

Odisha reports 3,067 new COVID-19 cases

Odisha's COVID-19 tally rose to 2,15,676 on Tuesday as 3,067 more people tested positive for the infection, while 15 deaths pushed the state's coronavirus death count to 828, a health official said.

The state also registered the recovery of 3,896 patients taking the total number of people cured of the infection to 1,81,481, which is 84.14 per cent of the caseload.

Maharashtra minister tests positive for COVID-19

Maharashtra minister Uday Samant has said he has tested positive for COVID-19 and is under home quarantine.

The minister for higher and technical education said on Twitter: "I have tested positive for COVID-19. I had some initial symptoms and the test result has confirmed the infection. My health is fine and I have home quarantined myself."

COVID-19: 2,197 new cases recorded in Chhattisgarh
With 2,197 new COVID-19 cases and 39 more deaths, Chhattisgarh's total count rose to 1,10,655 and the count to 916 on Tuesday, a health official said.

A total of 563 people were discharged from various hospitals, while 2,532 patients completed their home isolation during the day, taking the tally of recoveries to 78,514, he said.

The state now has 31,225 active cases, he said.

The worst-hit Raipur district reported 456 new cases, Durg 202, Raigarh 193, Janjgir-Champa 180 and Bilaspur 109, among other districts, he said.

Among the latest 14 fatalities, 12 died on Tuesday and two on Monday. Besides, 25 deaths that took place in the past were added to the tally on Tuesday, he added.

The state has recorded over 81,000 COVID-19 cases in the last one month.

COVID-19: Maharashtra government issues guidelines for Navratri, Dussehra
The Maharashtra government on Tuesday urged people to celebrate the upcoming Navratri and Dussehra festivals in a low-key manner due to the coronavirus outbreak and suggested organisation of health and blood donation camps instead of dandiya, garba and cultural events involving mass participation.

In guidelines issued during the day by the state home department, festivals organisers, also called mandals in local parlance, were asked to spread awareness on COVID-19, malaria and dengue among other diseases.

As per the guidelines, the height of Goddess Durga idols installed by mandals (during Navratri) have been capped at four feet and household ones at two feet, and immersion procession, crowded affairs during normal times, have been disallowed.

COVID-19: Gujarat adds 1,381 new cases, 1,383 recover; 11 die
Gujarat's COVID-19 caseload mounted to 1,36,004 on Tuesday with addition of 1,381 fresh
cases in the last 24 hours, state health department said.

With 11 more people succumbing to the infection, including four in Surat, the cumulative toll in the state went up to 3,442, it said.

While three persons died in Ahmedabad, two fatalities were reported frorm Vadodara. One patient died each in Gandhinagar and Rajkot, it said.

1,383 people were discharged after treatment in the last 24 hours, taking the total count of recoveries to 1,15,859, the department said in a release.

Gujarat's case recovery rate now stands at 85.19 per cent with 16,703 active cases.

Surat reported 311 new cases, followed by Ahmedabad with 195 infections.

COVID-19: Delhi records 48 new deaths, highest since July 16
The national capital reported 48 COVID-19 fatalities on Tuesday, the highest in over 70 days, as the count climbed to 5,320, while 3,227 fresh cases pushed the tally to over 2.76 lakh, authorities said.

This is the highest number of deaths reported in a day since July 16, when the city recorded 58 fatalities.

On September 26, Delhi had recorded 46 deaths, 42 the next day and 37 on September 28.

The fresh cases reported on Tuesday came out of the 59,102 tests conducted the previous day.
Forty-eight new fatalities have been recorded, taking the death toll to 5320, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Delhi health department.

The active cases' tally on Tuesday rose to 27,524 from 27,123 the previous day.

The death count from COVID-19 in Delhi stood at 5,272 on Monday.

COVID-19: Ahmedabad reports 195 new cases, 236 recoveries
As many as 195 new coronavirus cases emerged in Ahmedabad district of Gujarat in the last 24 hours, taking its count to 36,650 on Tuesday, the state government said.

With the death of three more patients during the same period, the count in the district reached 1,825, nearly half of the total 3,431 COVID-19 deaths registered in Gujarat so far, it said.

Also, 236 patients undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the district recovered and discharged in the last 24 hours, said a state government release.

With this, the tally of recoveries in the district went up to 30,572, it added.

Out of the 195 persons who were found positive for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, 176 were from Ahmedabad city and 19 were from the rural parts of the district.

COVID-19: All party meet in Kerala decides to adhere to health protocol strictly
Amid rising COVID-19 cases, an all-party-meet in Kerala on Tuesday decided to fight the pandemic together and strictly follow the health protocol, while ruling out a lockdown to contain the virus spread.

The Left government had called an all-party-meet to discuss the situation with the state seeing a record spike in coronavirus cases in the past few weeks.

Dismissing reports that the state will go into another lockdown, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said "The all-party-meet has agreed that lockdown is not a solution.

The parties have agreed to fight the pandemic together.

COVID-19: Rajasthan reports 15 more deaths, 2,148 new cases
Rajasthan reported 15 more COVID-19 fatalities on Tuesday, taking their number to 1,471, while 2,148 new cases pushed the infection tally in the state to 1,33,119.

The number of COVID-19 patients undergoing treatment stands at 20,376, a Health department bulletin said.

It said 1,10,254 people have been discharged after recovering from the disease till now.

In Jaipur, the death count from the coronavirus infection has reached 320, followed by 143 in Jodhpur, 111 in Bikaner, 104 in Ajmer, 100 in Kota, 80 in Bharatpur, 61 in Pali, 46 in Nagaur, 49 in Udaipur, 41 in Alwar, 29 in Barmer and 24 in Dholpur.

COVID-19: Maharashtra records 14,976 new cases, 19,212 recoveries
Maharashtra's COVID-19 tally rose to 13,66,129 on Tuesday with the addition of 14,976 new cases, the state health department said.
As many as 430 more patients succumbed to the infection, taking the fatality count in the state to 36,181, it said.

Also, 19,212 patients were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, raising the tally of recovered people to 10,69,159, the department said.

With this, the state now has 2,60,363 active cases. Mumbai city reported 1,713 positive cases during the day, which pushed its overall count to 2,02,614, while its count rose to 8,883 after 49 more patients died due to the disease, the department said.

COVID-19: Tamil Nadu Extends Lockdown Till October 31 With More Relaxations
Tamil Nadu has extended its coronavirus lockdown till October 31 but has also announced major relaxations, including re-opening of rural weekly shandies or local markers and government training centres.

The state government has also increased the limit of crew members at a film set from 75 to 100. Spectators will not be allowed.

Restaurants have also been permitted to run till 9 PM and takeaways till 10 PM.

In-person doubts clearing sessions in schools for class 10, 11 and 12, however, have been put on hold.
