Coronavirus Highlights: India Tops Globally With Highest Covid Recoveries, Lowest Mortality Rate

India continues to occupy the top global position with the maximum number of COVID-19 recoveries and accounts for 21 per cent of the recovered cases worldwide, while its share in the total cases stands at 18.6 per cent, the Union Health Ministry said today.

India has also maintained its global position with one of the lowest COVID-19 case fatality rates (CFR) when compared to several other countries.

While the global CFR stands at 2.97 per cent as on date, the comparative figure for India is 1.56 per cent, it said.

The deaths per million population in India is one of the lowest in the world. While the global average is 130 deaths per million population, India is reporting 73 deaths per million population, the ministry said.

More than one lakh people have died of coronavirus in India - the world's second worst-hit country - as the country recorded 1,069 deaths and total case load crossed 64 lakh with 79,476 new cases, data released by the Health Ministry this morning showed.

The country has been reporting more than 1,000 deaths a day for the past month, with the exception of September 28, the government data shows.

The country now has 9,44,996 active cases and more than 54 lakh recoveries, Health Ministry data shows.

India is in the number one position in terms of the number of recovered coronavirus cases followed by Brazil and the US, according to the Johns Hopkins University, which has been compiling COVID-19 data from all over the world.

Solomon Islands record first coronavirus case

The Solomon Islands announced they have lost the battle to stay free of the coronavirus, leaving just nine small, remote territories that have not reported a single case.

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare told the Pacific island nation in a televised address that a student who recently arrived from the Philippines on a repatriation flight carrying 96 passengers had returned a positive test.

He urged the population of 600,000 in the archipelago to remain calm and said contact tracing and other measures to prevent the spread of the virus had been activated and there was no need for a lockdown.

Two US Republican members test positive for COVID-19

Two Republican members of the US Senate Judiciary Committee have tested positive for the coronavirus, raising questions about the timing of Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Judge Amy Coney Barrett and whether additional senators may have been exposed.

US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell declared the confirmation process was going "full steam ahead." 

North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis and Utah Senator Mike Lee both said that they had tested positive for the virus. Both had attended a ceremony for Barrett at the White House on September 25 with US President Donald Trump, who announced on Friday that he had tested positive and was later hospitalised.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday donated his plasma at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment of critical COVID-19 patients.

Mr Pradhan, who had contracted the virus in July, also urged people who have recovered from COVID-19 to come forward and donate their plasma to save lives.

Domestic Air Traffic To Reach Pre-COVID Levels By Year-End: Minister

Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri Saturday said domestic passenger traffic could reach the pre-COVID level by the end of current year.

He said the daily domestic traffic has reached 1.76 lakh passengers from 30,000 passengers when the civil aviation operations resumed on May 25 following a two-month gap due to the pandemic.

"On May 25, we resumed civil aviation operations and at that time, there were around 30,000 passengers. Today, I received data as per which there were 1.76 lakh passengers yesterday. We are going to achieve almost the pre-COVID level during the period between Diwali and the end of this year," said Mr Puri.

Ireland seeing "significant escalation" in COVID-19 cases

Ireland is seeing a "significant escalation" in COVID-19 infections, the acting chief medical officer said on Saturday after reporting the highest daily death toll since May and the third-highest number of daily cases recorded to date.

Like most of Europe, Ireland has seen a steady increase in infections since the end of July and has tightened restrictions as a result, including banning all indoor restaurant dining and most trips in and out of the capital, Dublin.

The 613 new cases on Saturday was the highest daily total since late April, when the country was still in a full lockdown. Ten more people died, bringing the total number of coronavirus- related deaths to 1,810.

Record one-day spike of 423 COVID-19 cases in Meghalaya

Meghalaya registered its highest single-day spike of 423 COVID-19 cases on Saturday, which pushed the tally in the northeastern state to 6,456, a health department official said.

The death count rose to 54 after two persons died due to the infection, Health Services Director Aman War said.

Coronavirus News: Sikkim Reports 39 New COVID-19 Cases, 2 Deaths
Sikkim reported 39 new cases of COVID-19 and two more deaths on Saturday, an official said, reported news agency PTI. East Sikkim registered 37 cases and the other two cases were recorded in South Sikkim. There are 640 active cases in the state at present, the official said. So far, 2,367 patients have recovered from COVID-19, he said. The state's death count rose to 43 with the latest fatalities. Sikkim has so far reported 3,050 COVID-19 cases.

Coronavirus News: 111 New Cases Take Nagaland's COVID-19 Tally To 6,429
At least 111 people tested positive for coronavirus in Nagaland on Saturday, raising the state's tally to 6,429, Health Minister S Pangnyu Phom said, reported news agency ANI. He appealed to the people to follow the health safety guidelines to contain the spread of the disease. "Altogether 111 positive cases of COVID-19 were detected - 63 in Kohima and 48 in Dimapur," the minister said on Twitter. Forty-six patients 43 in Dimapur and three in Kohima - 3 were cured of the disease during the day, taking the total number of recoveries to 5,207," he said.

Coronavirus News: Thane Reports 1,552 Cases, 32 Deaths, Recovery Rate At 87 Per Cent
The number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra's Thane district increased by 1,551 on Saturday to touch 1,80,069, while 32 deaths took the count to 4,559, an official said, reported news agency PTI. The recovery rate in the district is 87.72 per cent while 2.53 per cent is the mortality rate, he said. "A total of 1,57,962 people have been discharged, 4,559 patients have died, leaving the district with 17,548 active cases," he said.

Coronavirus News: West Bengal Reports Record 3,340 New COVID-19 Cases
West Bengal today reported its highest single-day spike of 3,340 new COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to 2,66,974, according to a bulletin issued by the Health Department, reported news agency PTI. Sixty-two more patients died in the state, following which the death count rose to 5,132, it said. The discharge rate in the state improved to 87.92 per cent as the state saw 3,013 recoveries.

Coronavirus News: 1,343 New COVID-19 Cases Reported In Gujarat, 12 Deaths
Gujarat reported 1,343 new coronavirus cases today, increasing the state's infection count to 1,41,398, the health department said, reported news agency PTI. With 12 deaths, the number of coronavirus patients who died in the state rose to 3,490, it said. At the same time, recoveries rose to 1,21,119, with 1,304 patients being discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, the department said in its release in the evening. Gujarat now has a recovery rate of 85.66 per cent.

Coronavirus News: Tamil Nadu Adds 5,622 New COVID-19 Cases, Tally Climbs To 6.14 Lakh
Tamil Nadu today recorded 5,622 new COVID-19 cases taking the overall tally to 6,14,507 while the death count jumped to 9,718 with 65 more people dying from to the virus, the Health department said, reported news agency PTI. The number of recoveries climbed to 5,58,534 with the addition of 5,596 today, the bulletin said. The total number of active cases, including those in isolation, stood at 46,255.

Coronavirus News: Kerala Logs Highest Single-Day Recoveries Of 4476 COVID Patients
Kerala reported the highest single-day recoveries of 4,476 COVID-19 patients today, and 7,834 fresh cases, reported news agency PTI. The death count climbed to 813 with 22 more fatalities. "Samples of 4,476 people returned negative today, the highest recoveries on a single day so far," Health Minister KK Shailaja said in a press release. In the last 24 hours, 54,563 samples have been sent for testing. On Friday, the state's COVID count had crossed the 9,000-mark for the first time.
