India continues to occupy the top global position with the maximum number of COVID-19 recoveries and accounts for 21 per cent of the recovered cases worldwide, while its share in the total cases stands at 18.6 per cent, the Union Health Ministry said today.
India has also maintained its global position with one of the lowest COVID-19 case fatality rates (CFR) when compared to several other countries.
While the global CFR stands at 2.97 per cent as on date, the comparative figure for India is 1.56 per cent, it said.
The deaths per million population in India is one of the lowest in the world. While the global average is 130 deaths per million population, India is reporting 73 deaths per million population, the ministry said.
More than one lakh people have died of coronavirus in India - the world's second worst-hit country - as the country recorded 1,069 deaths and total case load crossed 64 lakh with 79,476 new cases, data released by the Health Ministry this morning showed.
The country has been reporting more than 1,000 deaths a day for the past month, with the exception of September 28, the government data shows.
The country now has 9,44,996 active cases and more than 54 lakh recoveries, Health Ministry data shows.
India is in the number one position in terms of the number of recovered coronavirus cases followed by Brazil and the US, according to the Johns Hopkins University, which has been compiling COVID-19 data from all over the world.

Solomon Islands record first coronavirus case
The Solomon Islands announced they have lost the battle to stay free of the coronavirus, leaving just nine small, remote territories that have not reported a single case.
Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare told the Pacific island nation in a televised address that a student who recently arrived from the Philippines on a repatriation flight carrying 96 passengers had returned a positive test.
He urged the population of 600,000 in the archipelago to remain calm and said contact tracing and other measures to prevent the spread of the virus had been activated and there was no need for a lockdown.
Two US Republican members test positive for COVID-19

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday donated his plasma at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment of critical COVID-19 patients.
Mr Pradhan, who had contracted the virus in July, also urged people who have recovered from COVID-19 to come forward and donate their plasma to save lives.
Domestic Air Traffic To Reach Pre-COVID Levels By Year-End: Minister
Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri Saturday said domestic passenger traffic could reach the pre-COVID level by the end of current year.
He said the daily domestic traffic has reached 1.76 lakh passengers from 30,000 passengers when the civil aviation operations resumed on May 25 following a two-month gap due to the pandemic.
"On May 25, we resumed civil aviation operations and at that time, there were around 30,000 passengers. Today, I received data as per which there were 1.76 lakh passengers yesterday. We are going to achieve almost the pre-COVID level during the period between Diwali and the end of this year," said Mr Puri.
Ireland seeing "significant escalation" in COVID-19 cases
Ireland is seeing a "significant escalation" in COVID-19 infections, the acting chief medical officer said on Saturday after reporting the highest daily death toll since May and the third-highest number of daily cases recorded to date.
Like most of Europe, Ireland has seen a steady increase in infections since the end of July and has tightened restrictions as a result, including banning all indoor restaurant dining and most trips in and out of the capital, Dublin.
The 613 new cases on Saturday was the highest daily total since late April, when the country was still in a full lockdown. Ten more people died, bringing the total number of coronavirus- related deaths to 1,810.
Record one-day spike of 423 COVID-19 cases in Meghalaya
Meghalaya registered its highest single-day spike of 423 COVID-19 cases on Saturday, which pushed the tally in the northeastern state to 6,456, a health department official said.
The death count rose to 54 after two persons died due to the infection, Health Services Director Aman War said.
Coronavirus News: Sikkim Reports 39 New COVID-19 Cases, 2 Deaths
Sikkim reported 39 new cases of COVID-19 and two more deaths on Saturday, an official said, reported news agency PTI. East Sikkim registered 37 cases and the other two cases were recorded in South Sikkim. There are 640 active cases in the state at present, the official said. So far, 2,367 patients have recovered from COVID-19, he said. The state's death count rose to 43 with the latest fatalities. Sikkim has so far reported 3,050 COVID-19 cases.

At least 111 people tested positive for coronavirus in Nagaland on Saturday, raising the state's tally to 6,429, Health Minister S Pangnyu Phom said, reported news agency ANI. He appealed to the people to follow the health safety guidelines to contain the spread of the disease. "Altogether 111 positive cases of COVID-19 were detected - 63 in Kohima and 48 in Dimapur," the minister said on Twitter. Forty-six patients 43 in Dimapur and three in Kohima - 3 were cured of the disease during the day, taking the total number of recoveries to 5,207," he said.
Coronavirus News: Thane Reports 1,552 Cases, 32 Deaths, Recovery Rate At 87 Per Cent
The number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra's Thane district increased by 1,551 on Saturday to touch 1,80,069, while 32 deaths took the count to 4,559, an official said, reported news agency PTI. The recovery rate in the district is 87.72 per cent while 2.53 per cent is the mortality rate, he said. "A total of 1,57,962 people have been discharged, 4,559 patients have died, leaving the district with 17,548 active cases," he said.
Coronavirus News: West Bengal Reports Record 3,340 New COVID-19 Cases
West Bengal today reported its highest single-day spike of 3,340 new COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to 2,66,974, according to a bulletin issued by the Health Department, reported news agency PTI. Sixty-two more patients died in the state, following which the death count rose to 5,132, it said. The discharge rate in the state improved to 87.92 per cent as the state saw 3,013 recoveries.

Tamil Nadu today recorded 5,622 new COVID-19 cases taking the overall tally to 6,14,507 while the death count jumped to 9,718 with 65 more people dying from to the virus, the Health department said, reported news agency PTI. At least 96 persons have tested positive for coronavirus, while five died of the infection in Maharashtra's Amravati district today, an official said, reported news agency PTI. With the latest cases and casualties, the tally in the region has reached 13,867, while the death count stands at 301, the official said. The district had recorded its first 100 deaths by August 18 and reached 200 on September 14, he said. Currently, the death rate in the district is at 2.1 per cent, the official said.

At least 190 personnel of the Maharashtra Police have tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours, raising the count of infections in the force to 23,879, an official said today, reported news agency PTI. Apart from this, the death of two police personnel has taken the death count in the department to 250, which includes 25 officers, the official said. 20,871 personnel have recovered from the deadly infection so far, while 2,758 are currently undergoing treatment at various hospitals and COVID-19 treatment facilities, he said.

185 prisoners have tested positive for coronavirus in different jails across the Jammu region, Director General of Prisons VK Singh said today, reported news agency PTI. He said temporary jails are being set up in various districts to isolate the asymptomatic positive detenues as part of efforts to ensure safety of the jail inmates and staffers. Mr Singh said roughly 200 prisoners, primarily in south Kashmir's Anantnag district jail and Srinagar Central Jail, have recovered from the infection over the past one month.
Dr Reddy's Seeks Nod For Phase 3 Trial Of Russian Covid Vaccine In IndiaHyderabad-based Dr Reddy's Laboratories has applied to the Drugs Controller General of India for permission to conduct phase-3 human clinical trials of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V against COVID-19 in India, sources said.
The Indian pharma giant has collaborated with Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) to conduct clinical trials of Sputnik V as well as its distribution.
Upon regulatory approval in India, RDIF will supply to Dr Reddy's 100 million doses of the vaccine, the firm said last month.
"Dr Reddy's Laboratories has applied to the DCGI seeking permission to conduct phase-3 human clinical trials of the Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19 developed by Russia. The DCGI will carry out a technical evaluation of the application before giving its approval," a source said, news agency PTI reported.
76% Active COVID-19 Cases From 10 States, Union Territories: CentreAt least 76.62 per cent of the active coronavirus cases have been reported from 10 states and union territories (UTs), the Union Health Ministry said on Friday.
According to the ministry, Maharashtra is leading the states' tally with more than 2.5 lakh cases. Karnataka follows with more than 1 lakh cases.
The government informed that active cases contribute only 14.74 per cent to the positive caseload of the country.
As per the health ministry data, Maharashtra alone has contributed to about 2,59,490 new COVID-19 cases, while Andhra Pradesh has reported at least 57,858 cases.
200 New Covid Cases In Arunachal Pradesh, Tally Rises To 10,220At least 200 more people, including eight security personnel, have tested positive for COVID-19 in Arunachal Pradesh, pushing the northeastern states caseload to 10,220, a senior health official said on Saturday.

Russia Confirms Nearly 9,900 Covid Cases In 24-Hour Period: Response CenterRussia has registered 9,859 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, up from 9,412 yesterday, taking the cumulative case total to 1,204,502, the coronavirus response center said on Saturday.
"In the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 9,859 COVID-19 cases in 85 regions, of which 2,680 (27.2 percent) were detected actively, with people showing no clinical symptoms," the response center said in a statement.
The largest increase was identified in Moscow, where 2,884 new positive tests were registered (up from 2,704 yesterday). A total of 358 new cases were recorded in St. Petersburg (up from 302 yesterday) and 259 cases were confirmed in the Moscow region (up from 244 yesterday).

Russia Conducted Over 47.2 Million Covid TestsMore than 47.2 million tests for COVID-19 have been performed in Russia since the outbreak, the country's consumer rights and human welfare watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, said on Saturday.
"We have conducted over 47.2 million coronavirus tests in Russia. 226,435 people are remaining under medical supervision," the watchdog said in a statement.
Rospotrebnadzor added that Russia conducted 423,000 tests in the past 24 hours alone.

Tripura Reports 190 New Covid CasesTripura's COVID-19 tally rose to 26,552 on Saturday as 190 more people tested positive for the virus, a health department official said.
The COVID-19 death count climbed to 286 with six more deaths due to the infection, he said.
West Tripura district, of which state capital Agartala is a part, has accounted for 156 of the 280 COVID-19 deaths, the official said.
Tripura currently has 5,369 active coronavirus cases, while 20,874 people have recovered from the disease. Twenty-three patients have migrated to other states, the official said.

Prohibitory Orders To Halt COVID-19 Spread Come Into Force In KeralaWith Kerala witnessing massive surge in COVID-19 cases, prohibitory orders came into force across the state on Saturday morning as per which not more than five people can assemble at any place, including banks, shops and commercial establishments.
There is no restriction on movement of public transport and government institutions, commercial establishments, industries, hospitals can function adhering to social distancing and break the chain protocols.
While in Idukki, only town areas, including the tourist hotspot of Munnar, Adimali and Vandiperiyar, the CrPC 144 order will come into force, in Kasaragod district, the order would be implemented till October 9.
In the remaining 12 districts, the prohibitory orders would be in place till the month end.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan warned that those defying the new restrictions will face stringent action.
While visiting shops, people should wear masks and gloves, ensure social distancing, and if they fail to adhere to the COVID-19 protocol, they will have to face action, Vijayan said speaking at an online function here on Saturday morning.
As gatherings pose an impending danger of a super spread of the infection, the prohibitory order, which came into effect from 9 am on Saturday, has been issued by the state government.
Kerala on Friday had reported the biggest single day surge of 9,258 coronavirus cases after over 60,000 samples were tested, forcing the government to take stringent measures to halt the spread of the virus, which has so far claimed 791 lives in the state.
Scientists Develop New Tool To Uncover Patterns In Coronavirus MutationsScientists have developed a method to quickly identify and label mutated versions of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 using information from a global database of testing information, an advance that may aid in the development of therapeutics against the deadly disease.
The new tool, described in the journal PLOS Computational Biology, identifies patterns from volumes of genetic information, and can identify whether the virus has genetically changed.
According to the researchers, including those from Drexel University in the US, the method can be used to categorise viruses with small genetic differences using tags called Informative Subtype Markers (ISM).
In the current study, they categorised slight genetic variations in the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and generated labels that are publicly available for scientists worldwide.
"The types of SARS-CoV-2 viruses that we see in tests from Asia and Europe is different than the types we're seeing in America," said Gail Rosen, a co-author of the study from Drexel University, news agency PTI reported.

14 Andhra Students Contracted Covid From Tuition Teacher: OfficialsAt least 14 children in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district have contracted coronavirus allegedly from a tuition teacher in the district, officials said.
All the children, who are below 12 years, had attended the tuition class by the teacher couple, who had tested positive, they added. Along with the students, a few parents have also tested positive for the contagious disease, they said
"On September 25, one person died of COVID-19 at Guntur government hospital. So far the area where he came from was a green zone with no cases. We tested 250 people of who 39 turned out positive. Fourteen were children from 8-12 years who had been attending tuition at a common point," Dr Seshu Kumar, PHC, Bhatluru village, said.
The district administration has issued notice to the teacher for holding classes in violation of Covid protocols issued by the government.
10 New Cases Push COVID-19 Tally Of Andaman And Nicobar Islands To 3,858The COVID-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 3,858 on Saturday as 10 more people tested positive for the infection, a health official said.
Five new patients have travel history, while five fresh infections were detected during contact tracing, he said.
Eight more people were cured of the disease, the official said.
The Union territory now has 174 active coronavirus cases, while 3,631 people have been cured of the disease and 53 patients have succumbed to the infection so far, he said.
The administration had till Friday sent 59,676 samples for COVID-19 tests, of which 43 reports were awaited, the official added.

COVID-19:1,718 New Cases, 8 Fatalities In TelanganaTelangana registered 1,718 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to 1.97 lakh while eight more deaths pushed the toll to 1,153.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 285, followed by Rangareddy 129 and Medchal Malkajgiri 115 districts.
The cumulative recovered cases stood at 1.67 lakh, while 28,328 are under treatment. As many as 49,084 samples were tested on October 2.
Cumulatively, 31.53 lakh samples have been tested. The samples tested per million population was 84,729, the bulletin said.
The case fatality rate in the state was 0.58 per cent, while it was 1.6 per cent at the national level.
The recovery rate in Telangana was 85.05 per cent, while it was 83.8 per cent in the country.

Ashok Gehlot Government Launches Anti-Covid CampaignOn the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary on Friday, the Rajasthan government launched a state-wide anti-COVID campaign aimed at defeating the pandemic through various preventive and precautionary measures.
The campaign was launched by the state Cabinet members with the ministers distributing face masks and urging people to wear them and take all precautionary measures to defeat coronavirus.
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot was to launch the campaign but he could not do it due to his ill health and the ministers launched the campaign by distributing masks in the markets of the walled city area.
With "No Mask-No Entry" theme, the campaign was inaugurated while maintaining social distancing norms.
The government will distribute one crore masks among the people. From October 3, the campaign will be started in other districts of the state as well.
All in-charge ministers will go to their respective districts and start the campaign and make people aware of the urgency to wear masks.

Chinese Mainland Reports 10 New Imported COVID-19 CasesThe Chinese mainland reported 10 new imported COVID-19 cases on Friday, bringing the total number of imported cases to 2,885, the National Health Commission said Saturday.
Of the new imported cases, four were reported in Shanghai, three in Guangdong, two in Sichuan, and one in Shaanxi, the commission said in its daily report.
Among all the imported cases, 2,696 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery, and 189 remained hospitalized, with one in severe condition, the commission said.

Obama Extends Support To Trump After COVID-19 Positive Result
Former US president Barack Obama on Friday sent a message of support to White House successor Donald Trump and his wife Melania, setting aside the bitter election battle to wish them a rapid recovery from Covid-19.
"Although we're in the midst of a big political fight, and we take that very seriously, we also want to extend our best wishes to the president of the United States, the first lady," Obama said at the start of a fundraising event with vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
"Michelle and I are hopeful that they and others that have been affected by Covid-19 around the country are getting the care that they need, that they are going to be on the path to a speedy recovery." he said.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Tests Positive For Coronavirus
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya has tested positive for COVID-19. The minister asked everyone, who came in his contact in the last few days, to get themselves tested for COVID-19 and quarantine themselves.
Mr Maurya, 51, who holds the portfolio of PWD ministry, said in a tweet: "After the initial symptoms of corona infection, I got myself tested. My report has come positive today."

US President Donald Trump moved to a military hospital for treatment on Friday after being diagnosed with COVID-19 as his administration and re-election campaign scrambled to adjust to an extraordinary twist in his turbulent presidency.
Roughly 17 hours after he announced he had tested positive for the coronavirus, Trump walked slowly from the White House to a waiting helicopter to be taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He wore a mask and business suit and did not speak to reporters.
"I think I'm doing very well, but we're going to make sure that things work out," Trump said in a brief video posted to Twitter.
76% Active COVID-19 Cases From 10 States, Union Territories: Centre
At least 76.62 per cent of the active coronavirus cases have been reported from 10 states and union territories (UTs), the Union Health Ministry said.
According to the ministry, Maharashtra is leading the states' tally with more than 2.5 lakh cases. Karnataka follows with more than 1 lakh cases.
The government informed that active cases contribute only 14.74 per cent to the positive caseload of the country.
