India's total tally of COVID-19 cases surged to 3,15,72,344 with 44,230 new infections being reported in a day, while the recoveries have crossed 3.07 crore, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Friday.
The death count increased to 4,23,217 with 555 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.
Meanwhile, Karnataka and capital Bengaluru today recorded a steep spike in Covid cases.
The state reported 2,052 new cases today, 34 per cent more than Wednesday's tally of 1,531. The capital city clocked 505 cases, also 34 per cent more than Wednesday's count of 376.
According to the state bulletin, the number of active Covid cases in the state stands at 23,253. The state's positivity rate was 1.37 per cent on Thursday as 1,48,861 samples were tested.
President Joe Biden on Thursday stepped up actions to combat the spread of Covid-19's surging Delta variant, asking every US federal worker to either declare they are fully vaccinated or wear masks and be tested.
"We have the tools to prevent this new wave of Covid from shutting down our businesses, our schools, our society as we saw happen last year," the veteran Democrat said in a speech on his administration's new initiatives.
The White House said ahead of the address that all four million federal employees and on-site contractors "will be asked to attest to their vaccination status."

Resolve Covid Grievances Maximum Within 3 Days: Centre To All Departments
The Centre has asked all departments to give high priority to COVID-19 public grievances and resolve them within a maximum of three days, according to an official order.
It also reduced to 45 days the maximum time limit to resolve grievances received through the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS), which is an online system for people to lodge their grievances from anywhere and anytime on issued related to central ministries, state governments and Union Territories.
An analysis of grievance disposals in CPGRAMS reveals that about 87 per cent ministries or departments have disposed of grievances in less than 45 days, the order said issued by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG).
"CPGRAMS grievances shall be resolved promptly as soon as they are received and maximum within 45 days," it said.

Germany To Require Tests For All Unvaccinated Travellers
Anyone entering Germany from abroad will have to take a Covid-19 test unless they are fully vaccinated or have recovered from the disease, according to new rules signed off by Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet Friday.
"From August 1, all people entering Germany will be obliged to have proof of a negative test, vaccination or recovery," Merkel's spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer said in a statement.
"This rule is there to keep the number of new infections brought into Germany as low as possible," said Demmer, adding that it would apply to all travellers over the age of 12.
According to a draft seen by AFP, there will be exceptions for cross-border commuters and those passing through in transit.
Both PCR tests taken within 72 hours of entry and rapid antigen tests taken within a maximum of 48 hours will be accepted, the draft said.

Delta variant drives Middle East virus surge: WHO
The World Health Organization said Thursday the Delta variant has led to a "surge" in coronavirus outbreaks triggering a "fourth wave" in the Middle East, where vaccination rates remain low.
The global health body said the highly transmissible strain, first detected in India, has been recorded in 15 out of the 22 countries and territories of the region under its purview, stretching from Morocco to Pakistan.
"The circulation of the Delta variant is fuelling the surge in Covid-19 cases and deaths in an increasing number of countries in WHO's Eastern Mediterranean Region," it said in a statement.
