India has crossed 14 lakh cases in 179 days, the government data shows. More than three lakh cases have been reported since last Monday when the country's coronavirus cases passed 11 lakh, three days after crossing 10 lakh cases.
The country had crossed the one lakh-mark on May 19. It took about two weeks for the cases to double. One June 13, India's coronavirus tally had surged to 3.08 lakh cases, 10 days after it passed two lakh cases. The Covid count stood at 4.1 lakh cases on June 21, 5.08 lakh cases on June 27, 6.04 lakh cases on July 2 and 7.19 lakh cases on July 7. Four days later, the tally surged to 8.2 lakh; 9.06 lakh cases were logged by July 14.
The top five states, which reported the highest number of infections since yesterday, are: Maharashtra (9,431), Andhra Pradesh (7,627), Tamil Nadu (6,986), Karnataka (5,199) and Uttar Pradesh (3,246).
The five states that reported the highest number of Covid-linked deaths during this period are: Maharashtra (267), Tamil Nadu (85), Karnakata (82), Andhra Pradesh (56) and West Bengal (40).
The country - which has a population of about 130 crores - has tested over 1.68 crore samples so far. The highest number of samples - 5,15,472 - were tested on Sunday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch on Monday new COVID-19 testing facilities in Noida, Mumbai and Kolkata, which will ramp up testing capacity and help strengthen early detection and treatment in the country, the Prime Minister's Office said. The virtual launch event will be attended by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and the chief ministers of Maharashtra, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh -- Uddhav Thackeray, Mamata Banerjee and Yogi Adityanath.
Maharashtra - the country's worst-hit state by the pandemic - has logged over 3.75 lakh cases so far. In Mumbai's Dharavi, Asia's biggest slum that was once a hotspot, however, only two new cases were logged on Sunday, showing signs of improvement.
Delhi's COVID-19 recovery rate reached nearly 88 per cent on Sunday, with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal saying the cases are "steadily" going down. The national capital has logged 1.3 lakh cases so far, the third highest in the country.
Worldwide, over 1.62 crore people have contracted the virus so far; over 6.48 lakh have died. The United States remains the epicentre of the pandemic with over 42 lakh cases followed by Brazil, which has reported over 24 lakh cases so far, and India at the third spot.
China recorded 61 new coronavirus cases on Monday -- the highest daily figure since April -- propelled by clusters in three separate regions that have sparked fears of a fresh wave. The outbreak had originated in China's Wuhan city in December.
