Coronavirus India Live Updates: The number of deaths from COVID-19 climbed to 113 in West Bengal on Sunday with 14 more people succumbing to the infection in the last 24 hours, a state government bulletin said. The state also reported 153 fresh COVID-19 cases, the highest in a day so far.

Of the 14 deaths, Kolkata alone accounted for 10 while two each were from North 24 Parganas and Howrah districts. There have been 72 deaths due to comorbidities where COVID-19 was incidental, the bulletin said.

Meanwhile, Indian Railways plans to restart passenger trains in a phased manner starting May 12, the national transporter said in statement on Sunday evening, with ticket bookings to be opened from 4 pm on Monday. Tickets will only be available through the IRCTC website, with ticket counters (including those for platform tickets) at all stations to remain closed.

Passenger services, suspended since the coronavirus lockdown that began March 25, will start with 15 "special" trains (total of 30 journeys) departing from Delhi and connecting cities in Assam, Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Tripura.

Only passengers with confirmed and valid tickets will be allowed to enter the station at Delhi, the Railways warned, adding that all passengers would also have to wear face masks, under screening at departure (only asymptomatic people can travel) and maintain social distancing at all times.

"These trains will be run as special trains from New Delhi station connecting Dibrugarh, Agartala, Howrah, Patna, Bilaspur, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Madgaon, Mumbai Central, Ahmedabad, and Jammu Tawi," the Railways' statement said.

Meanwhile, five pilots, an engineer and a technician of Air India have tested positive for coronavirus, sources in the airline have told NDTV.  The pilots were detected after 77 pilots of the airline were tested for the virus yesterday on priority basis. None of the infected pilots have any symptoms and they have been advised home quarantine, the sources said.  All of them are from Mumbai.

India reported 3,277 new coronavirus patients in the last 24 hours and 128 deaths linked to the illness that brings the total number of cases to 62,939, including 2,109 deaths, the Union Health Ministry said today. At least 50 per cent of these cases have been reported from five major cities - Delhi, Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra, Ahmedabad in Gujarat, and Chennai, Tamil Nadu's capital. The Indian Council of Medical Research or ICMR, the nodal body for COVID-19 testing, has partnered with a biotech firm - the Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL) - to develop a fully indigenous vaccine for the virus.

Earlier today, a Navy warship sent to Maldives to bring back stranded Indians arrived with 698 nationals. Nineteen pregnant women were also on board the ship that started the journey from the Maldivian capital Male on May 8.

4 Indore Municipal Corporation staff test COVID-19 positive

As many as four employees of Indore Municipal Corporation have been infected with coronavirus, said Dr Praveen Jadia, Chief Health and Medical officer.

"One officer and three employees of the Municipal Corporation have been reported to get infected with the coronavirus. Their contacts are being traced and their screening for COVID-19 will be done soon," said Dr Jadia while adding that all the three employees had been doing their duty daily amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Coronavirus: 33 new COVID-19 cases in Telangana on Sunday

A total of 33 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Telangana on Sunday, taking the total number of active cases to 415, the state health department said.

According to the official data, the state has recorded a total of 1,196 coronavirus cases with 30 deaths so far. 751 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals.

"Today 33 new confirmed positive cases have been reported in the state, with that the active COVID-19 cases have risen to 415. Till now, the total positive cases reported in the state are 1,196 of which 30 have died," state health department stated.

"751 people have been completely cured and discharged from the state-run hospitals," it added.

Assam Chief Minister dials prominent personalities

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday dialled several prominent personalities of the state and apprised them of the measures being taken to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.

The state government is working wholeheartedly to create a robust infrastructure of healthcare facilities to reach out to the people who are falling prey to the deadly coronavirus, he told them. 

The chief minister also inquired about their health and requested them to lead a life lifting their morale high so as to transfer enthusiasm and positivity among different sections of the people. 

Mr Sonowal spoke to former vice principal of B Borooah College Jagadindra Roy Chowdhury, former head of Assamese Department of Pandu College Bhabani Prasad Upadhaya, former MP Arun Sharma, former ambassador to North Korea Binanda Kumar Gogoi, veteran businessman Krishna Kumar Goenka, sports organiser Manoj Mohanty, social activist Gauranga Roy, Dilip Basu and Swapnanil Madhukar, among others, an official statement said.

COVID-19: 3 dead in Odisha, 83 new cases

Odisha's Ganjam district on Sunday reported its first Covid-19 death after a man died of the disease, raising the fatalities in the state to three, a health department official said.

The total number of coronavirus cases in Odisha jumped to 377 with 83 more people testing positive for the disease in the biggest single-day spike, he said, adding all fresh cases, except one, were detected among those in different quarantine centres.

Madhya Pradesh's coronavirus positive cases grow to 3,614

The number of coronavirus positive cases in Madhya Pradesh rose to 3,614 on Sunday after 157 more persons, 78 of them in Indore alone, were found infected, health officials said. The virus also claimed four more lives since Saturday night, which took the death toll in the state to 215, they added.

Two deaths were reported in Indore and one each from Bhopal and Dhar, the officials said.

The virus has so far impacted 39 of the total 52 districts in the state.

Pune COVID-19 cases climb by 125 to 2,857; 156 dead

COVID-19 cases in Pune district of Maharashtra mounted to 2,857 on Sunday with 125 more people testing positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours, a Health official said. 

The number of deaths mounted to 156 with eight people, including a 13-month-old girl, succumbing to the viral infection, he said, adding that the toddler was suffering from malnutrition. She is the youngest victim of the virus in Pune, he added. 

A total of 194 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery, which was the highest in a single day, the official said. 

"Of the total 125 cases, 102 are in the Pune Municipal Corporation limits, which now has 2482 patients. The number of cases in Pimpri Chinchwad stands at 170 while in Cantonment and rural areas at 212," he added.

Coronavirus India: 1,278 new COVID-19 cases, 53 deaths in Maharashtra

Maharashtra reported of 1,278 new COVID-19 cases and 53 deaths on Sunday, the state health department said. The number of positive cases in the state rose to 22,171. 

Maharashtra is the worst-affected state due to COVID-19.

According to the Union Health Ministry, India has recorded 62,939 cases so far including 19,358 cured cases and 2,109 deaths.

Global COVID-19 death toll exceeds 280,000

The global deaths from COVID-19 has surpassed 280,000, according to the database compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

There are currently 280,507 fatalities worldwide. The United States, the United Kingdom, and Italy have the highest numbers of deaths among countries, 78,932, 31,930, and 30,560, respectively.

The total number of cases is currently over 4,067,112, while the number of recoveries is at 1,392,359.

16 fresh COVID-19 cases in Tripura; total tally rises to 152

Sixteen people tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Tripura on Sunday, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases in the state to 152, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said.

All the fresh cases were reported from the 86th battalion headquarters of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Ambassa in Dhalai district, which has been designated as a ''red zone'', he said.

Nashik's COVID-19 count reaches 671, number of deaths 28

The number of COVID-19 patients in Nashik district of Maharashtra rose to 671 on Sunday after the samples of eight people, who died earlier, and those of 37 others tested positive for the infection, health officials said.

The virus has so far claimed the lives of 28 people, they said. The district's virus hotspot continues to be Malegaon with 534 cases, they said. 

"The eight deaths took place earlier, but their reports returned positive for coronavirus today. With this, the death toll from the infection in Nashik district is 28," said an official.

Cloronavirus Lockdown: Jamia sends stranded hostellers back to J-K in special bus

The Jamia Millia Islamia on Sunday sent its students from Jammu and Kashmir back to their native places in a special bus arranged by it.

Two university guards, who are former armymen, are also accompanying students in the bus, the varsity said. These students were stranded in hostels due to the nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, the university said.

The bus was properly sanitised before leaving for Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University for medical screening of students, guards and drivers for fever and other symptoms related to the coronavirus, it said.

The university is making arrangements for hostellers to send them back to their homes in their respective states, it said.

Coronavirus: Delhi Saket court employee tested positive for COVID-19

A Saket district court employee has tested positive for coronavirus infection, District Judge Neena Bansal Krishna said on Sunday.

According to a circular issued by the district judge, the wife of a junior judicial assistant of the court informed telephonically that her husband was found infected with coronavirus on Saturday evening. 

The court staff had last visited the office on May 4 due to some official work and come in contact with a court's stenographer, the circular said. The stenographer has been asked to remain in self-quarantine for 14 days from May 4 to May 17 and take necessary precautions, it said.

Coronavirus India: BSF reports 18 new COVID-19 cases today, total count at 276

Eighteen new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday, taking the total number of cases in the force to 276.

According to an official, out of the new cases, 16 have been detected in Tripura and two cases are from Delhi. "18 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Border Security Force (BSF) today- 16 from Tripura and 2 are from Delhi. The total number of active COVID-19 cases in the force stands at 276," said the official.

Coronavirus news: UK's Boris Johnson issues new virus advice ahead of lockdown plan

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson issued new stay-at-home advice on Sunday and warned he would proceed cautiously on lifting a nationwide coronavirus lockdown as the death count in Britain, already the highest in Europe, continues to mount.

In a televised address to the nation at 7:00 pm (1800 GMT), Johnson is expected to extend confinement orders imposed in late March, although garden centres are set to reopen, according to news agency AFP.

Coronavirus update: Global deaths from coronavirus pass 280,000

More than 280,000 people have now died from the new coronavirus, most of whom were in Europe and the United States, according to a tally by AFP from official sources.

In total, 280,011 deaths have been registered throughout the world, of which 156,095 were in Europe, the most-affected continent. The United States is the country that has recorded most deaths at 78,862. It is followed by Britain (31,855), Italy (30,560), Spain (26,621) and France (26,380).

Coronavirus update: 61 more COVID-19 cases detected in Punjab; total now 1,823

Sixty-one more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Punjab on Sunday, taking the number of confirmed cases in the state to 1,823, officials said here.

Of the fresh cases, 35 are in Rupnagar, eight each in Amritsar and Fatehgarh Sahib, seven in Mohali and one each in Amritsar, Kapurthala and Patiala, according to news agency PTI.

Coronavirus news: All shops to be shut from Monday in 69 Pune containment zones

All shops, including ones dealing in essential items, have been told to down shutters from Monday in 69 containment zones in Pune municipal corporation limits as people were not observing social distancing and other lockdown norms in place for the novel coronavirus outbreak, said civic chief Shekhar Gaikwad.

He said the decision to shut all shops was taken after a review meeting, PTI reported.

Pune is among the worst hit urban areas in the country with the district having 2,732 cases as on Saturday. Of these, 2,380 are in Pune Municipal Corporation limits.

Coronavirus update: Mumbai Mayor visits coronavirus-hit Arthur Road Jail

Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar on Sunday visited the Arthur Road Jail complex in central Mumbai, where 77 inmates and 26 staffers have been infected with the novel coronavirus, and the adjacent police quarters, a civic official said.

She interacted with personnel posted in the prison and asked officials of BMC's G-South ward to disinfect the area, PTI reported.
