Amid stories of devastation and heart-break wrought by the Covid pandemic sweeping India, barely do any compare to a woman's from yesterday: She had to watch her husband being consigned to flames over a video-call.
Based in China, her banker husband Manoj Sharma contracted the disease while on a visit to Indore, Madhya Pradesh, to take care of an unwell relative. She had stayed back in China.
On Monday, Mr Sharma died at Indore's Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences and a day later, his body was cremated with the consent of his family in China.
The consent letter was obtained online, senior police officer Prashant Choubey told news agency PTI.
As the last rites were performed by a local social worker, all that the woman could do was sob, watching it all online. Videos of the heart-wrenching scenes circulated on social media.
Madhya Pradesh reported 12,727 COVID-19 cases and 77 deaths in the past 24 hours. The state has seen 4,713 Covid-linked deaths till now. A "corona curfew" has been imposed in capital Bhopal till April 26 due to the rising cases.
