Corrupt ex-Medical Council chief on university board

Ahmedabad: Desai may have been sacked from the presidency of the Medical Council of India, his medical registration may have been cancelled but that has not stopped him from being elected to the Senate of the Gujarat University - uncontested.

''There are serious charges against him, taking money for giving permission to colleges to run. And now giving him a backdoor entry, that too to a prestigious university body, this will damage the university reputation," said Manish Doshi, Syndicate Member, Gujarat University.

But Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor, Parimal Trivedi said, ''As far my information is concerned, Ketan Desai's registration of degree was done in the Gujarat Medical Council, and they haven't cancelled that."

His image might have taken a severe beating but he continues to wield enormous clout in Gujarat's political and medical circles, a reason why say his critics, not even a single doctor from amongst the thousands in Gujarat dared to contest election against him.
