Mumbai: The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a couple on Sunday on charges of kidnapping a two-year-old boy, from Dadar Railway Station last month.
The couple used to kidnap children to sell them to childless couples or even tantriks, who would offer them as human sacrifice.
Suraj Sahu was kidnapped on May 13, while waiting for a train with his parents, Madhvi and Rajesh Sahu.
Accosting the family, kidnappers Pushpa and Samar Singh Choudhary tried to strike up a conversation with them, in the course of which Pushpa and Madhvi exchanged numbers. Within minutes, the kidnappers had disappeared with the child.
When notified, cops launched an extensive search operation, tracking the kidnappers to the Alwar district in Rajasthan.
After two failed search missions, the cops were finally able to nab the kidnapper couple on Sunday.
During interrogation following their arrest, the couple revealed their modus operandi.
Rescued after being held 40 days in captivity, Suraj was accompanied to Mumbai on Monday, and returned to his parents yesterday.
"Suraj was lucky he had not been sold to anyone. If we hadn't rescued him when we did, something catastrophic could have happened," said a police officer.
