Mumbai: The bureaucracy in Maharashtra need to get real about tackling the problem of malnutrition in the tribal areas of state, said the Bombay High Court criticising the state government for inaction in the matter.
"The British government ... didn't bother to take any interest in tribals... Though we have got independence, the same approach has continued. The bureaucracy has the same approach," the court said.
The High Court was reacting to Maharashtra government's statement in court saying malnutrition cases in the state have reduced. However, a bunch of petitions by NGOs put the figure at as high as over 50,000 a year.
The court will pass the order in the case on October 25.
Criticising the state government, the court said, "Sometimes we feel we are doing an exercise in futility. Kind of sensitivity required from WCD (Department of Women and Child Development) is absent. They are just not concerned."
"It's public money, it is tax payers' money, and it should be used for the purpose it is earmarked for," the court said.
