Guwahati: A local court has restrained Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi from making any statement against BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding his alleged involvement in Saradha chit fund and Louis Berger scams.

Kamrup Metropolitan Civil Court No. 1 Judge SI Rahman yesterday passed an order of injunction with regard to the Rs 100-crore defamation case filed by Mr Sarma in December last year.

The court restrained Mr Gogoi from making statements regarding Mr Sarma's alleged involvement in the Saradha and Louis Berger scandals.

Along with the defamation case, an injunction application was also filed with a prayer to restrain the chief minister from making such statements in future.

Earlier on January 18, Mr Gogoi had appeared in person in the court in response to a summon in connection with the defamation case filed by Mr Sarma, a former minister in his Cabinet.

Mr Sarma had filed the defamation suit after Mr Gogoi had in a press conference in Delhi in December last year reportedly implicated the BJP leader in the Saradha and Louis Berger scams.

The US Department of Justice found Louis Berger guilty of paying bribes to Indian officials including ministers for a water supply project in Goa and the only other such project the firm was implementing in India was in Guwahati and an allegation was made relating to this also.
