Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati seems to be in no mood to oblige the Congress and scale down the charges against state Congress chief Rita Joshi, who is now in jail for making derogatory remarks against Mayawati.
The Congress has been saying that Rita's remarks do not attract the provisions of the SC/ST atrocities act, a non-bailable offence.
On Friday, a court in Moradabad will decide whether to give bail to Joshi. She was arrested on Thursday in a midnight crackdown, shortly after her house in Lucknow was set ablaze, allegedly by BSP workers.
The UP Congress has announced a statewide indefinite 'save the democracy campaign' from Friday to protest the alleged ' jungle raj' in the state.
According to sources, some Congress leaders feel that fallout of Rita Joshi's remarks against Mayawati would be on the recently revived fortunes of the party in Uttar Pradesh. And the man who made it happen - party general secretary Rahul Gandhi - will be in Amethi on Friday. He has promised to make a statement on the Rita episode in his constituency.
