CPI today said there should be "no room for political vendetta" in a democracy like India's, after Congress president
Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi were granted bail in the
National Herald case by a court in New Delhi.
"As far as the political vendetta is concerned, Congress party has been raising this issue. If there is any political vendetta, it should not be there. There should be no room for any political vendetta in a democracy like ours," CPI national secretary D Raja said.
Mr Raja welcomed the Gandhis and other
Congress leaders appearing before the Patiala House court as "law abiding" citizens.
"India is a country which believes in rule of law. Respecting law, being law-abiding citizens, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders have gone to the court and the court gave them bail. It shows the Congress party had decided to fight the case legally," the Rajya Sabha member said.
In the backdrop of the National Herald case, Congress today launched a no-holds-barred attack on the government, accusing it of resorting to "unprecedented" level of vendetta politics, and targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the petitioner
Subramanian Swamy was his "mask".
Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi and three other accused -- Motilal Vora, Oscar Fernandes and Suman Dubey -- were granted bail in the National Herald case after a local court rejected complainant Mr Swamy's opposition to the relief for them on the ground they are influential and can flee the country.
The case is based on a private criminal complaint lodged by Mr Swamy against them of cheating, conspiracy and criminal breach of trust.
