Curfew in parts of Meerut after violence

Meerut: Curfew was clamped in certain parts of the city in the wee hours of Wednesday after two groups of people fought over parking of vehicles and clashed with police which used batons to quell them, leaving 14 injured.

The 24-hour curfew was imposed in Kotwali, Brahmpur, Delhi Gate and Nisari Gate areas of the city, District Magistrate Kamini Chauhan Ratan said.

She said no untoward incident was reported since morning after the administration deployed paramilitary forces, including 600 personnel from the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and 500 jawans from PAC to bring the situation under control.

The clash erupted after shopkeepers took objection to the parking of a tractor near the railway station and allegedly beat up the driver.

When the police arrived at the spot, the two sides started pelting stones at the security men who used batons to disperse the mob.

Police have raided some houses and arrested 10 anti-social elements.
