Varanasi: A curfew was imposed for a short period on monday in parts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh after clashes between protesters and the police. Schools and colleges in the city will remain closed today.
The violence took place during protests against police action on September 22 on a religious procession during the immersion of Ganesha idols.
Police lathi-charge on a religious leader and his followers, who were heading to the banks of river Ganga for the immersion ritual, led to anger.
Today, several religious leaders took out a protest march in the afternoon and locals also joined in.
When the march reached a key crossing in the city, there was stone throwing between the police and protesters, who allegedly burnt six vehicles including two police jeeps. The police also used batons again.
Curfew was imposed in Dashashwamedh, Chowk, Kotwali and Luxa areas.
