Srinagar:
Curfew has been declared in Srinagar to prevent street clashes after the death of a 22-year-old protester in alleged firing by paramilitary forces yesterday.
Police said Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel had allegedly fired at protesters throwing stones at their vehicles, killing Altaf Ahmed Wani.
The CRPF men were returning from hospital, where they had donated blood for colleagues injured in yesterday's attack by militants on a CRPF camp in the city.
But locals are disputing the claim that CRPF vehicles were targeted. They say there were no protests in the area where Wani was killed.
The ruling National Conference said Wani was their party activist.
The incident came within hours of the attack on the CRPF camp, in which five jawans were killed. Eight jawans and four civilians were injured.
Union Home Secretary RK Singh said the attackers were Pakistanis, and while two were killed by the security forces, another two may have escaped.
Kashmir has been tense since the execution in February of Afzal Guru, who belonged to Sopore near Srinagar, for his role in the 2001 attack on Parliament in which 13 people were killed. He was hanged and buried at Tihar Jail, triggering protests in his home state. The government has refused to return his body to his family.
