Curfew still on in Bareilly, no fresh violence

Bareilly: While curfew continues for the 14th day in riot-hit Bareilly, some shops are being allowed to open and essential commodities are being supplied to people.

The situation is seemingly under control. A flag march was held on Sunday morning. A peace march by different communities will be held later on Sunday, although politicians are being kept at bay. Former Union minister Maneka Gandhi, part of three member BJP team to inquire about the violence was stopped from entering Bareilly.

Maneka is among a three-member team sent to the riot-hit area by BJP President Nitin Gadkari to probe the communal violence. (Watch: Maneka Gandhi stopped from entering Bareilly)

There's tension in Bareilly for the past few days following the release of a cleric who was arrested on charges of inciting clashes.

Leader of Ittehad-e-Millat Conference, Maualna Khan, was arrested on Monday last on charges of inciting a mob that set shops and vehicles on fire. He was released on Thursday evening.

Soon after his release, there was a violent backlash from the Bajrang Dal on Friday and more areas of Bareilly were placed under curfew.
