In a nationwide crackdown on Commonwealth Games' suppliers and contractors, more than 300 Income Tax (I-T) officials raided over 60 locations across India on Thursday.
Firms in the National Capital Region (NCR), Jamshedpur, Kolkata and Mumbai were amongst those raided to unearth unaccounted income.
Shiv Naresh sports in Delhi that supplied track suits and synthetic tracks, Delhi-based Sweka Powertech Engineers (they supplied electric poles, bulbs, street lighting), Satya Prakash and brothers (Delhi based firm contracted for street lighting and beautification) and MBL infrastructure in Kolkata in charge of for civil works, are a few big names that came under the I-T scanner.
Thursday's raids mainly concentrated on private companies. While investigations into the multi-pronged corruption charges are already going on, it is most likely that names of more government officials, who might have worked with these private players, could throw up.
Earlier, the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) had asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to register a case and investigate the Rs 35 crore-contract given by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to Sweka Powertech to install street lights in the capital before the Commonwealth Games.
Investigators are probing if the firm had inflated prices and tampered tender documents.
With this mammoth crackdown, the I-T sleuths have raided almost 100 locations since the Games ended but the alleged corruption net is so widespread that the I-T officials say they expect more action in the days to come.
The recently-held mega event in Delhi was the most expensive Commonwealth Games ever. The Prime Minister's office has promised that those who "shamed the country" through corrupt practices will be punished.
Different agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate, have been asked to uncover a multitude of financial misdeeds that range from payments being made to companies that don't exist, to contracts that allowed those hired for the Games to get away with severely over-priced equipment and services.
Earlier this month, the offices of four different groups that provided overlays or moveable equipment like treadmills were raided by the Income Tax officials. BJP leader Sudhanshu Mittal's house was among the places searched for documents by tax officials. Mittal was a Director for a company owned by his nephew, Vinay Mittal, that won a multi-crore contract for the Games. Mittal says he is being made a political scapegoat.
