Kolkata: Cyclone Aila brought large-scale damage to life and property in West Bengal on Monday but Kolkata may have missed the worst with the Cyclone appearing to veer away. Nine people have already died across West Bengal with incessant rains and winds causing havoc.

With incessant rains and winds hitting the state, 14 flights to Kolkata have been diverted. Several trains and auto services have also been halted.

The strong winds have uprooted trees and caused several road accidents. In fact, one man was trapped and had to be rescued from a mangled car.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh said on Monday that cyclone "Aila" was nearing land in the Bay of Bengal and advised ports to hoist warning signals and asked all fishing boats and trawlers not to venture into deep seas.

It was the second storm in the Bay of Bengal in less than one month. Several people were killed and hundreds of thatched houses destroyed at the country's Cox's Bazar on April 17.

Earlier, two persons were killed in tree collapse as a severe storm with a wind speed of 80 km per hour hit Kolkata and its neighbouring districts with Cyclone Aila expected to make landfall on the West Bengal coast on Monday.

In the two districts of North and South 24 Parganas, neighbouring Kolkata, hundreds of mud houses collapsed while there were breaches in embankments flooding 200 villages, reports from districts said.

The West Bengal government held an emergency meeting and readied contingency measures, including evacuation of people from vulnerable areas.

The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal had turned into a cyclonic storm which would be accompanied by heavy to very heavy rains, the Met department said.
