Cyclone Biparjoy: PM Modi held a review meeting yesterday.

Evacuation will continue in villages near the Gujarat coast today as cyclone 'Biparjoy' intensified into an "extremely severe cyclonic storm". It is likely to make landfall between Kutch and Pakistan's Karachi on Thursday afternoon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday held a high-level review meeting and was briefed about the efforts taken to mitigate the impact of the cyclone.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today issued an Orange alert for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts in Gujarat as the cyclonic storm Biparjoy is set to cross the Jakhau Port in Gujarat by the evening of June 15 as Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS).

Union Power Minister RK Singh on Tuesday held a review meeting with senior officers of the Ministry of Power, Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Grid Controller of India and PGCIL for the preparations for maintenance of power supply in coastal areas of Gujarat and Rajasthan which are likely to be affected by Cyclone 'Biparjoy'. Cyclone 'Biparjoy': 21,000 people from coastal districts shifted to temporary shelters
As cyclone 'Biparjoy' with an extensive damaging potential is likely to make landfall near Jakhau port in Gujarat's Kutch district on Thursday evening, the administration has so far shifted 21,000 people from different coastal districts to temporary shelters, an official said on Tuesday.

The government is aiming to evacuate people within 10 km of the coast.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone is predicted to make landfall near Jakhau port as a 'very severe cyclonic storm' with maximum wind speed reaching up to 150 kilometres per hour (kmph).

The cyclone is likely to impact the Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka and Jamnagar districts of Gujarat the most.

"We have already started evacuating people residing near the coast who are likely to be affected the most during the landfall. So far, various district administrations have shifted nearly 21,000 people to temporary shelters. The evacuation process is still on and all the targeted population will be shifted by today evening to safer places

On 15th June, wind speed in Dwarka, Jamnagar, Kachchh and Morbi districts of Gujarat will be around 125-135 kmph and gusting to 150 kmph, it could have extensive damaging potential.
