The intensity of Cyclone Biparjoy has reduced from 'very severe' category to 'severe' after the storm made landfall in coastal areas of Gujarat on Thursday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The weather department said that the cyclone has now moved from sea to land and is centred towards Sauarashtra-Kutch, adding that heavy rains are expected in Rajasthan today.
According to the latest weather bulletin from the India Meteorological Department, it will weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm over Saurashtra and Kutch around noon and subsequently into a deep depression around evening.
The Relief Commissioner informed that 22 people got injured, while electric poles, and trees were uprooted amid severe heavy rains coupled with gusty winds

According to news agency ANI, a total of six National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams evacuated 127 civilians from Rupen Bandar Government Primary School and reshifted to NDH School Dwarka after Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in coastal areas of the state on Thursday evening.

No lives were lost after Cyclone Biparjoy made a landfall in Gujarat, however, 23 people were injured and electricity supply was disrupted in about 1,000 villages in the state, NDRF Director General Atul Karwal said on Friday.
The Arabian Sea cyclone ripped through Kutch and parts of Saurashtra region of Gujarat leaving a trail of destruction. Heavy rains lashed the entire Kutch district since the cyclone started making landfall near Jakhau Port from 6.30 pm on Thursday and the process continued till 2.30 am, according to officials.
Mr Karwal said while two lives unfortunately were lost before the landfall, not a single human life was lost post the landfall in Gujarat.
This is because of the efforts of the Gujarat administration and other agencies that worked to ensure the least loss of life and property, he added.

Cyclone Biparjoy, which ripped through Kutch and parts of Saurashtra region of Gujarat, has left a trail of destruction as gusty winds and rains wreaked havoc, officials said.
Heavy rains lashed the entire Kutch district since the cyclone started making landfall near Jakhau Port from 6.30 pm on Thursday and the process continued till 2.30 am, an official said.
Biparjoy (meaning disaster or calamity in Bengali) unleashed destructive wind speeds of up to 140 kmph and incessant rains as trees and electricity poles were uprooted, while seawater entered villages located in low-lying areas.
"Forty-five villages in Naliya tehsil of Kutch district plunged into darkness after electricity cables were snapped and poles got uprooted due to the cyclone," the official said.
The Severe Cyclonic Storm "Biparjoy" over Saurashtra and Kutch lay centered at 0530 hours IST of today, the 16th June, 2023 over the same region about 70 km east-northeast of Jakhau Port (Gujarat) and 50 km northeast of Naliya.

The cyclone has moved northeastwards and has weakened into a cyclonic storm and will become a depression by the evening over south Rajasthan, the official said.

The Gujarat government has taken measures to protect its extensive wildlife ahead of Cyclone Bipajoy with a "zero-casualty approach". Rescue teams have been strategically positioned in Gir Forest, Narayan Sarovar Sanctuary in Kutch and Mata No Madh, Barda.
The endangered Asiatic lions are getting a great deal of attention, with 184 teams under nine divisions and 58 control rooms mobilized for them.
The hi-tech monitoring system was developed in anticipation of just such a natural disaster. This system equips selected lions living in groups with radio collars, enabling their movement to be tracked via satellite link by the monitoring cell.
The teams will rescue the animals, take rapid action, and clear fallen trees.
Cyclone Biparjoy which packed high wind speeds and brought heavy rains caused complete disruption of normal life in Gujarat's Kutch district on Thursday as trees were uprooted in large numbers, power failure was reported in many areas, and low-lying areas near the sea were flooded.
Biparjoy made landfall near Jakhau as a very severe cyclonic storm around 6.30 pm on Thursday with wind speeds of 115 to 125 kmph gusting upto 140 kmph. The entire landfall will be over by midnight, the IMD said.
A total power blackout was witnessed in Mandvi town. Many trees were uprooted on Jakhau-Mandvi road as well as in Mandvi town due to the strong winds.
"No casualties have been reported so far," district collector Amit Arora said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and took stock of the situation after the cyclonic storm 'Biparjoy' made landfall in Gujarat's coastal areas on Thursday evening.
PM Modi also asked about the details of the safety arrangements for wild animals including lions in Gir Forest.
"Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendrabhai Modi had a telephonic conversation with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel late today to get complete details of the Biparjoy Cyclone situation approaching Gujarat. Hon'ble Prime Minister also learned the details of the security arrangements for wild animals including lions of Gir Forest," Gujarat CMO tweeted.
Earlier on Thursday morning, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also chaired a review meeting at the State Emergency Operation Center in Gandhinagar on Thursday morning.
