Visakhapatnam: The deep depression over the North Andaman Sea has intensified into a cyclonic storm and is centred over the Southeast Bay of Bengal at about 1,000 km East South East of Visakhapatnam.
According to a weather office statement issued on Wednesday night, the depression would move West North-West and intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm in the next 36 hours.
'Cyclone Hudhud' is expected to cross North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur by noon on October 12, 2014, the statement said.
Distant warning signal number two has been hoisted at Visakhapatnam, Machilipatnam, Nizampatnam and Krishnapatnam ports warning of the cyclone, the statement said.
Distant warning signal number two with section signal number five has been hoisted at Kakinada and Gangavaram ports, the statement said.
Fishermen have been advised to be cautious while venturing into the sea, the statement said.
The statement said that 'Cyclone Hudhud' is expected to reach speeds of about 150 kmph on the morning of October 12.
The statement has warned about potential disruption of communication lines, minor disruption to rail and road traffic, extensive damage to temporary shelters as well as threats due to flying debris.
Visakhapatnam District Collector N Yuvaraj and Srikakulam District Collector Gaurav Uppal are scheduled to convene a meeting on disaster preparedness with heads of various departments tomorrow.
Meanwhile, control rooms have been set up in both the districts and their toll-free numbers are 180042500002 (Visakhapatnam) and 18004256625 (Srikakulam).
