Cyclone Michaung live updates: Most of Chennai remains submerged due to heavy rain under the impact of 'Michaung', which has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm. The storm, currently over Bay of Bengal, is likely to head towards the Andhra Pradesh coast. Heavy inundation has been reported from low-lying areas in Chennai while three people have died and the airport has been closed till Tuesday morning. The cyclone is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam early morning tomorrow around 5 am.

Cyclone Michaung is expected to make landfall early tomorrow morning around 5 am between Nellore and Machilipatnam, the weather department said.
A road in Chennai's upscale Poes Garden area caved as Cyclone Michaung brought with it strong gusts of winds and torrential rains that pounded the city.
Visuals from the area showed a gaping cavity in the middle of the road and an electric pole collapsing into it. Makeshift structures flanked the edge of the cavity.
Poes Garden in south Chennai is a premier locality and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha lived here at her residence Veda Nilayam.
The Indian Army today said it swiftly responded to a request for assistance from the Chennai civic body and mobilised two columns for the mission. The contingent comprised around 135 personnel equipped with essential resources, including boats, flood relief stores, and vehicles. Indian Army said it successfully rescued and assisted about 300 citizens during their mission.
Severe backlash from sea waves in all four outlets is slowing down the drainage of water, said civic authorities in Chennai where Cyclone Michaung brought heavy rain and led to waterlogging. The inundation is equally spread across Chennai and the water is expected to be drained in 12 hours if the rain stops, they said.
Raja Babu, Collector of Andhra Pradesh's Krishna District, says Cyclone Michaung will touch Krishna district after midnight and reach Machilipatnam before 4 am. All necessary steps have been taken, said the District Collector.
Taiwan's Foxconn has halted production of Apple iPhones at its facility near Chennai due to heavy rains, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday. Foxconn is yet to decide whether to resume production on Tuesday, the sources said.
Tuesday has been declared a public holiday in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts of Tamil Nadu in view of Cyclone Michaung. The Tamil Nadu government declared the public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. All schools, colleges, educational institutions, and government offices, including the offices of public undertakings/corporations, boards, banks, and financial institutions in the four districts will be closed due to the harsh weather conditions. However, all essential services, such as police, fire service, local bodies, milk supply, water supply, hospitals and medical shops, power supply, transport, fuel outlets, hotels and restaurants, etc, and the offices engaged in disaster response, relief and rescue activities, shall function as usual.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has cautioned countrymen amid the approaching 'Cyclone Michaung', saying that he was in constant touch with the governments of states on the eastern coast to coordinate relief and rescue efforts. Speaking at a victory rally at the BJP headquarters in the national capital on Sunday, he also urged BJP workers in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh to join the relief and rescue efforts and support the local administration.
