Cyclone Michaung live updates: Most of Chennai remains submerged due to heavy rain under the impact of 'Michaung', which has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm. The storm, currently over Bay of Bengal, is likely to head towards the Andhra Pradesh coast. Heavy inundation has been reported from low-lying areas in Chennai while three people have died and the airport has been closed till Tuesday morning. The cyclone is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam early morning tomorrow around 5 am.

Cyclone Michaung: Landfall Likely Between Andhra's Nellore, Machilipatnam Today
Cyclone Michaung, which lay centred over the west coast of the Bay of Bengal, off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts, on Monday, is likely to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam on Tuesday morning in the form of a severe cyclonic storm, the weather department informed.
"The Severe Cyclonic Storm "MICHAUNG" over Westcentral and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts moved N-NW with a speed of 12 kmph during the past 6 hours and lay centred at 8:30 am on December 4 over WC Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts, about 50 km southeast of Nellore, 130 km north of Chennai, 180 km south of Bapatla and 200 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam," read a post on the official X handle of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday.

Indian Railway Preps For Cyclone Michaung
The Indian Railways has geared up its entire machinery in a big way to ensure and manage smooth and safe railway operations in the areas likely to be affected by the cyclonic storm 'Michaung', reported news agency ANI.
The Railways, as part of its preparedness for cyclone-related disaster management, has set up an emergency control cell at the divisional/HQ level with officers from operating, commercial, engineering, electrical, signal/telecommunications, security, etc. branches in each shift to monitor around the clock and take necessary action in connection with train operations.
A war room at the board level has also been activated. Safety counsellors on each shift have been nominated to assist with emergency control.

A road in Chennai's upscale Poes Garden area caved as Cyclone Michaung brought with it strong gusts of winds and torrential rains that pounded the city.
Visuals from the area showed a gaping cavity in the middle of the road and an electric pole collapsing into it. Makeshift structures flanked the edge of the cavity.
Poes Garden in south Chennai is a premier locality and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha lived here at her residence Veda Nilayam.

Heavy rains hit parts of Andhra Pradesh on Monday under the influence of Cyclone Michaung as the state government issued an alert to the eight districts as it nears the southern coastal region before landfall. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy held a review meeting on the cyclone with senior officials and set several relief efforts in motion. "Cyclone Michaung is moving north-westwards in south-west Bay of Bengal. It is moving at a speed of 8 km per hour and is currently 90 km from Chennai and 140 km from Nellore. It will cross the coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam as a strong storm near Bapatla on Tuesday morning. Due to this effect, there will be light to moderate rains in many places in Kostanhra today and tomorrow. Fishermen should not venture into the sea and people should stay alert," according to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority.

Tuesday has been declared a public holiday in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts of Tamil Nadu in view of Cyclone Michaung. The Tamil Nadu government declared the public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. All schools, colleges, educational institutions, and government offices, including the offices of public undertakings/corporations, boards, banks, and financial institutions in the four districts will be closed due to the harsh weather conditions. However, all essential services, such as police, fire service, local bodies, milk supply, water supply, hospitals and medical shops, power supply, transport, fuel outlets, hotels and restaurants, etc, and the offices engaged in disaster response, relief and rescue activities, shall function as usual.

Cyclone Michaung Will Be Faced Effectively: Krishna Collector P Rajababu
"We have taken all preemptive measures in the district. Preventive measures have been taken to ensure there's no loss of life and property. We have set up 57 relief camps in seven coastal mandals. We are moving people from the low-lying areas to relief camps. We have provided necessary facilities to all those in the relief camps. Medical facilities are also being provided along with food and accommodation. Financial assistance will be provided to those who leave the relief camps as per government orders. We will provide Rs 1000 to those who come alone and Rs 2,000 to families," said Krishna District Collector P Rajababu.

Cyclonic storm Michaung has intensified to severe cyclonic storm at around 8:30 am on Monday, about 90 km from Chennai and 200 km from Puducherry, says India Meteorological Department. It is likely to intensify and cross South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during Tuesday forenoon with a maximum wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.

Sixteen trees uprooted in Chennai under the impact of Cyclone Michaung have been removed, said a police bulletin on Monday. As many as 17 subways have been closed due to waterlogging.
