Cyclone Nivar Highlights: Tamil Nadu, Puducherry On Alert As Cyclone Nivar Intensify

Cyclone Nivar LIVE Updates: Nivar will bring extremely heavy rainfall and winds between 120 and 130 km per hour, with gusts of up to 145 km per hour, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has advised, adding that coastal areas could receive heavy rains till Thursday.

Cyclone Nivar: Around 1,200 NDRF personnel have been deployed in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry

Cyclone Nivar, which will likely become a "very severe cyclonic storm", is expected to make landfall Wednesday evening between Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu (which is around 56 km from state capital Chennai) and Karaikal in Puducherry.

Nivar will bring extremely heavy rainfall and winds between 120 and 130 km per hour, with gusts of up to 145 km per hour, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has advised, adding that coastal areas could receive heavy rains till Thursday. This morning Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted to assure the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments - both have said tomorrow is a public holiday - of all possible support.

Around 1,200 National Disaster Response Force personnel have been deployed in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh as well, NDRF chief SN Pradhan told PTI. 12 teams are in Tamil Nadu (six in Cuddalore district and two in Chennai), seven in Andhra Pradesh and three in Puducherry. An additional 20 teams will be on standby in Odisha's Cuttack, Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh and Thrissur in Kerala.

Six Special Trains In Thiruvananthapuram Division Cancelled In View Of Tamil Nadu Cyclone
Six special trains of the Thiruvananthapuram division of the Southern Railways, have been cancelled on November 25 in view of the IMD forecast of cyclonic storm Nivar making landfall over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.

Trains which have been cancelled are: Train No.02634 Kanyakumari Chennai Egmore Daily Superfast Express Special; Train No 02633 Chennai EgmoreKanyakumari Daily Superfast Express Special; Train No 06724 KollamChennai Egmore Daily (Ananthapuri) Express Special; Train No 06723 Chennai EgmoreKollam Daily (Ananthapuri) Express Special; Train No.06102 KollamChennai Egmore Express Special via Sengottai, Madurai Jn andTrain No 06101 Chennai Egmore Kollam Express Special via Madurai Jn, Sengottai.

The railways has said full refund would be granted to passengers of the cancelled trains, a press release said.

For e-ticket holders, automatic refund would be granted.

For tickets booked at railway counters, the time limit has been relaxed and passengers can avail refund from the railway counter on surrendering of tickets within 15 days of the scheduled departure of the train as against the regular norm of three days, the release added.

Cyclone Nivar: Prohibitory Orders Clamped In Puducherry To Restrict Movement Of People
The Puducherry district administration on Tuesday imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC in this region to prevent movement of people in public places, in the wake of cyclone warning issued by the Indian Meteorological department.

District Collector Purva Garg said the order prevents collection of people or movement of people in public places.

All shops and business establishments were directed to be closed from 9 pm on Tuesday to 6 am on Thursday.

She said in a release that the IMD had warned of possible impact of cyclone "Nivar" along the coastline of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Puducherry is expected to be ''severely impacted'' by the cyclone and there was a grave danger to life, health and safety of the public because of the cyclone predicted.

This order would not be applicable to staff engaged in law and order duty and also the essential services such as milk supply, fuel stations and pharmacies, she added.

Cyclone Nivar is currently 50km south-west of Chennai and is moving north-westward. The prediction is that it is likely to move towards the Tamil Nadu coast and cross close to Puducherry at around 5 pm tomorrow. It will intensify further: RK Jenamani, senior scientist, IMD.
