Cyclone Nivar: Fishermen have been advised not to go out to sea and low-lying areas.

Gusty winds and rains lashed parts of Tamil Nadu today leaving several areas inundated and authorities have housed over one lakh people in shelters as severe cyclone "Nivar" hurtled towards the coast. Nivar would intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm and it is likely to cross the coast between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry soon, the India Meteorological Department said.

With rains drenching parts of the state, authorities have evacuated over one lakh people and housed them in shelters besides disconnecting power supply in vulnerable areas as a precautionary measure.

While Chief Minister K Palaniswami declared Thursday a public holiday for 13 districts, a government order included three more districts considering the safety of people in view of the cyclone.

The Puducherry Chief Minister spoke to NDTV on Tuesday and said large gatherings had been banned and public movement prohibited from 9 PM to 6 AM Thursday. He also said non-essential shops and services had been shut; only milk booths, fuel stations, hospitals and pharmacies, and government offices will be allowed to open.

The National Disaster Response Force has earmarked a total of 50 teams -- with 30 being deployed on the ground in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh -- in view of the cyclone moving ahead from the Bay of Bengal towards the coastal areas. Twenty teams have been kept on standby at Vijaywada (Andhra Pradesh), Cuttack (Odisha) and Thrissur (Kerala).

Cyclone Nivar Makes Landfall; Heavy Rain In Chennai, Puducherry: 10 Points
Cyclone Nivar made a late-night landfall near Puducherry. The tropical storm has weakened from a "very severe cyclonic storm" to a "severe cyclonic storm" with a wind speed of 100-110 km per hour, gusting up to 120 km per hour, the weather office said in a statement. The coastal states have been bracing for the cyclone - the fifth-strongest category on India's scale of seven storm types - and more than a lakh people were evacuated from low-lying areas. Nivar has brought with it heavy rain and strong winds and forced authorities to declare a public holiday till Thursday, close the Chennai airport and metro services.

Indian Navy deploys ships, aircraft, helicopters, diving, disaster relief teams on standby for support

As "severe" cyclonic storm Nivar approached Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts, the Indian Navy on Wednesday put ships, aircraft, helicopters, diving, and disaster relief teams on standby for rendering support to state and Union Territory administration, ANI reported. 

"Cyclone Nivar Update: Indian Navy ships, aircraft, helicopters, diving, and disaster relief teams standby for rendering full support to State administration as Severe Cyclonic Storm Nivar crosses Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast," tweeted the official spokesperson of Navy.

Landfall process of Cyclone Nivar begins

"Very severe cyclonic storm Nivar now lies about 50 km east-southeast of Cuddalore, about 40 km east southeast of Puducherry.Landfall process commence. Centre of cyclone to cross coast near puducherry  within next 3 hours," says India Meteorological Department.

Cyclone Nivar to make landfall in Tamil Nadu soon

Cyclone Nivar is expected to make landfall in Tamil Nadu in an hour, says weather department.

It is centred around 130 km south of Chennai.

Landfall will likely be North of Puducherry, between Puducherry and  Marakkanam, say officials.

Water levels in Tamil Nadu rivers rise due to heavy rainfall

Due to continuous rain in most parts of Tamil Nadu signalling the fast approaching Cyclone Nivar, river Aaniar in Tiruvallur district and river Palar in Chengalpattu district are witnessing a rise in water levels, said Central Water Commission (CWC).

In a series of tweets, CWC said that river Nagari in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh is also raising, which is likely to give additional inflows into Poondi Dam in Tiruvallur District of Tamil Nadu.

Landfall of Cyclone Nivar expected around 2am

Indian Navy and NDRF officials say 120 km winds will impact Puducherry while 100 km winds will be witnessed in Chennai. They said there is a second depression forming. Landfall of Cyclone Nivar is expected between 2 am and 3 am. Landfall will be just north of Puducherry, officials say.

Cyclone Nivar: Railways cancels over dozen special trains, offers full refund

The Railways has cancelled over a dozen special trains on November 25 and 26 scheduled to either originate from and terminate in the southern states of the country in view of the impending cyclone Nivar, and offered full refund. Nivar is forecast intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm and is likely to cross the coast between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry before dawn on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department said.

BJP cancels Vetrivel Yatra in Tamil Nadu till December 5 due to Cyclone Nivar

In view of Cyclone Nivar, Bharatiya Janata Party has cancelled programmes under Vetrivel Yatra from November 25 till December 5 in Tamil Nadu, said BJP state chief L Murugan. "Due to Cyclone Nivar, we've cancelled programmes under Vetrivel Yatra which started on November 6, at Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, and two other places today. The remaining programmes have been postponed and yatra will culminate on December 5 at Thiruchendur," he said.

National Disaster Response Force  deploys 25 teams for rescue ops in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 25 teams in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, which are expected to be hit by the "very severe" Cyclone Nivar by the end of the day, or by early hours of tomorrow morning, said SN Pradhan, Director General, NDRF.

"The India Meteorological Department is categorising Cyclone Nivar as 'very severe'. With keeping the average gusting speed of 130-140 kilometres per hour in mind, we are preparing for the worst. Our teams have been on the ground for the last 2 days, and the rest will reach by today evening. Till now 25 teams are deployed through Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, including 19 teams in Tamil Nadu and six in Puducherry," said Mr Pradhan.

Puducherry declares Thursday as public holiday due to Cyclone Nivar

The territorial administration declared on Thursday a public holiday for all departments and educational institutions in Puducherry and Karaikal regions with the cyclonic weather continuing. Today was also a public holiday.

Hundreds evacuated in Chennai as cyclone nears

Hundreds of people in low lying areas in Chennai were evacuated and more than 150 relief centres were on standby ahead of a "very severe cyclonic storm", government officials said.

Many automobile companies in Chennai, home to a flourishing automobile industry and dubbed the "Detroit of South Asia", shut operations on Wednesday, and some were likely to remain closed on Thursday, a person familiar with the matter said. Vessels in the city's port have been moved to sea and port operations will likely remain shut until the cyclone makes landfall, a senior port official said.

Puducherry prepares for cyclone Nivar, Chief Minister visits coastal areas

As cyclone Nivar approaches, the Puducherry government said the administrative machinery is fully geared up to meet any exigency while Chief Minister V Narayanasamy visited coastal villages to monitor steps taken to ensure the safety of fishermen community.

The union territory has been experiencing intermittent moderate rains since Tuesday night under the influence of the cyclonic storm.

In a video message, Lt Governor Kiran Bedi appealed to the residents to stay indoors and asked those living in low lying areas to move to safer places.
