Una:
A foot march by hundreds protesting the recent atrocities against Dalits at the hands of cow vigilantes reached Una in Gujarat Sunday evening covering 380 kilometres.
The 10-day 'Una Chalo Dalit Padyatra' led by journalist turned activist Jignesh Mewani and former IPS officer Rahul Sharma was commenced by 800 people in Ahmedabad.
The flogging of four Dalit men, who were stripped till waist and tied to the back of a car in Una on false charges of cow slaughter on July 11, had mobilised massive protests by Dalits in Gujarat.
The idea of foot march from Ahmedabad to Una was floated by Rahul Sharma at a mass gathering of Dalits held in the city on July 31.
The March will culminate today into a flag hoisting ceremony. Late Dalit Scholar Rohit Vemula's mother will also attend the event.
The foot march was allegedly attacked twice on route and it was also diverted by the district administration to avoid any confrontation with the dominant Darbar community before it reached Una.
