Darjeeling: A youth was allegedly shot dead by the police in Darjeeling's Mirik town last night after a clash between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters spun out of control.

While the Morcha claims the youth was one of its supporters and fired at by the police, NDTV's queries to top police officials were unanswered.

Tourism minister Gautam Deb, who is Trinamool's Darjeeling district chief, has, however, denied reports of police firing.

Eyewitnesses say TMC and Morcha's activists clashed last evening in Mirik. Morcha supporters then gathered at the police station demanding the release of a youngster who was arrested during the clashes.

Police vehicles were set ablaze. The police lathi-charged, used teargas to disperse the crowd before opening fire that killed one person, Morcha activists claim.
