Day 10 of huge LoC encounter, Pakistan army denies links

Lt Gen Gurmeet Singh of the 15 corps said the infiltrators may include members of Pak army's Border Action Team

New Delhi: The Pakistan army has denied that it is involved with a massive infiltration attempt in Kashmir. The encounter in the Kupwara area is now in its 10th day; yesterday, the Indian army said that Pakistani troops might be involved.

"No such thing happened at all. This is a blatant lie. We totally deny this baseless allegation," a Pakistani military spokesperson told PTI.

According to sources, sporadic firing is still on in the Keran sector between the Indian army and terrorists, who have been restricted to an area of around one square km. The army's operation is its final stages, the sources added.

The Indian army says five of its soldiers have been injured and 12 intruders have been killed, though none of their bodies have been found.

"This is not a pure infiltration attempt. These could be 20-30 in number and may include (the Pakistan army's) BAT," Lieutenant General Gurmeet Singh of the 15 corps said on Wednesday, referring to the Border Action Team of the Pakistani army. The unit consists of members of Pakistan's commando Special Services Group. (Watch)

The fighting began on September 24 when a group of at least 30 militants tried to cross over from Pakistan into India.

While the encounter was raging, Dr Manmohan Singh met Pakistani premier Nawaz Sharif in New York for the first time since Mr Sharif was elected in May.

They agreed to task senior military officers to "find effective means to restore the ceasefire" in Kashmir, where major violations along the line of Control have led to simmering tension.
