New Delhi: The Group of Ministers (GoM) on Bhopal will meet again on Saturday - the second in a series of meetings before the panel submits its report to the prime minister on Monday.
Today, the panel is likely to look at legal and health issues in two sittings through the day. It will also look at re-opening cases for harsher punishment against the guilty.
In 1996, the Supreme Court reduced the charges to the level of a road accident. But the Law Ministry is keen on a curative petition against that judgement so that stronger charges can be brought.
The panel will also examine legal options on extraditing Warren Anderson, on a case against Dow Chemicals to determine and also can the US company be made to pay for the clean-up of the Union Carbide site. However, a case is already on in the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
They are also going to be looking at changing laws to provide for stringent punishment of those responsible and consider sanctions, and sanctioning liabilities for disasters like this.
In the second round in the evening, the Group of Ministers will look into issues like better health care and expanding the scope of medical benefits.
