Decision-makers should run India, says Narendra Modi in speech to India Inc

Gandhinagar: Narendra Modi, the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, told industry leaders in Gujarat today that India has become "a country of under-achievers" largely because of the failed economic policies and inaction of the central government.

"There is a need to shake off this despair. An atmosphere of confidence and trust is very important in India now," he said addressing a meeting of the industry body FICCI in Gandhinagar. (Read: Highlights of Mr Modi's speech)

India Inc has been vocal in its support of Mr Modi, who is credited with establishing Gujarat as an economic powerhouse within India. Mr Modi, 63, appeared to take equal jibes at the Prime Minister and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi.

"The Prime Minister likes to speak about 'inclusive growth'. Until we create opportunities for the poor through education, how can it happen?" he asked. (Rate Narendra Modi's speech)

In what could be interpreted as a critique of Mr Gandhi, he said, "India must be run by decision-makers. It has become fashionable now to run away from responsibility."

Mr Gandhi, 43, is often  faulted by detractors for failing to accept a government post despite driving policies of the government.  Yesterday, for the first time, he indicated that he may be willing to accept his party's nomination as its prime ministerial candidate.
