Kolkata: Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday took stock of the construction work for the upcoming Behrampore Military Station in West Bengal, which would be a first of its kind green model military camp.
Mr Jaitley and Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag were briefed by officials near the camp site in Murshidabad district whose foundation plaque was laid by President Pranab Mukherjee in February.
The Rs 600 crore project in the 250-acre land is set to be an eco-friendly 'model military camp' that would be replicated in all future infrastructural developments of similar military stations wherever feasible, Defence PRO TK Singha said.
The military station will integrate the existing topography, natural features and water bodies among other things.
Located nearly mid-way between Kolkata and Siliguri, the military station when ready will also help boost the local economy in the area.
Earlier, General Dalbir Singh Suhag who arrived at the Fort William HQ of Eastern Command on Saturday was briefed on various operational preparedness and readiness of the Command.
The Army Chief also visited Panagarh Military Camp where he was briefed about the ongoing operational preparations for raising of the Army's latest Strike Corps.
The Army Chief later left for a two-day visit of forward areas in the Eastern Sector.
