Defensive Gujarat offers help to molested foreigner

Ahmedabad: It's bad enough that 23-year-old Kaya Enrich, a British student in India, was molested by a plumber. It became worse when she was humiliated in court. "There was no translator. I didn't not know what was being said to me. I was asked to answer questions in Gujarati, I didn't understand."

Now that Kaya has decided to stay on and fight back, a defensive Gujarat Bar Council has offered help. "We will inquire into the incident, if we receive a complaint," says Anil Kella, Executive Chairman of the council.

Though Kaya has filed a case against the local plumber for trying to molest her, she now wonders if it's worth it. "The questioning was aggressive, and it seemed to be aimed at demeaning me as far as possible so as to weaken the case."

Kaya claims she was asked questions that don't seem relevant to the case. Questions like whether she drinks, or if her friends smoke. She says, "The experience in the court was humiliating. It was not physically painful as sexual assault, but I was just as frightened".

The Gujarat High Court has given Kaya a private lawyer, after she filed another complaint.
