New Delhi: Call it the AAP effect but the BJP has announced a slew of populist measures, aimed at improving the image of Delhi's civic body that it controls.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which provides civic amenities to the bulk of the national capital, is often in focus for corruption and the poor quality of services offered.

But the BJP today announced a host citizen-friendly measures and steps to make the functioning of the municipal body more transparent. These include keeping parking rates and property taxes unchanged.

The corporation will also make it mandatory to clear proposals for building plans within one month and will make most services available online.

"We are the number one party in Delhi... MCD elections are still a far way off... we have no need to be nervous... others who are second and third should be worried," Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel told NDTV.

Mr Goel also said that Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde's statement asking Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung for more time to allow Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to try and form the government indicated a pact between the latter and Congress.

The BJP, with 31 of the 70 seats, emerged as the single largest party in the just-concluded assembly elections but with failed to reach the halfway mark. The BJP's party was spoiled by Mr Kejriwal's AAP, which with 28 seats, made a scintillating debut, and was instrumental in the outgoing Congress' rout.
