New Delhi:
A day after proving its majority in the Delhi legislature, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) got its candidate, MS Dhir, elected as the Speaker.
Mr Dhir defeated the BJP's Jagdish Mukhi by five votes for the post.
The Congress's eight legislators voted along with the AAP.
Last month, the AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, short-circuited the political system in Delhi by landing second place in the first election it contested. The ruling Congress was demoted to a paltry third spot. The BJP won the most seats but did not get a majority.
The AAP has formed the government with its 28 MLAs and external support from the Congress.
Its focus on combatting corruption and the in-your-face VIP culture of Delhi politicians has enabled it to be seen as a platform for change.
Chief Minister Kejriwal and his ministers have opted for simpler houses than the grand bungalows they are entitled to; they have also said they will use official cars only while working.
