Zia-ur Rehman, a suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist and an accused in Delhi serial blasts case, has challenged his expulsion from Jamia Millia University following his arrest last year.
Rehman, who along with other IM suspects, is in judicial custody in connection with September 13 serial blasts in the national capital, filed his appeal before the Majlis-i-Muntaziah (executive council) of the University against his expulsion on September 22 last year.
"If the appellant was suspended on September 22, 2008, itself then why and for what purposes press conferences were organised and press statements were issued to show that the University stood by its students," the appeal filed by advocate M S Khan alleged.
On one hand, the Vice Chancellor said the varsity would stand by the accused as nobody is guilty until proven so but on the other hand he is expelled without being heard, the petition alleged.
Rehman, who was studying in BA (final) in the University, had approached for issuance of admission ticket for appearing in the examination, it said.
However, later it was said that Rehman has already been expelled, Khan said, adding it forced the accused to file the appeal under the Jamia Millia Islamia Act for setting aside the varsity's order.
