Congress general secretary DigvijayaSingh has termed the heckling of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by Left activists in New Delhi as "unfortunate" and slammed Delhi Police for failing to ensure safety of the Trinamool Congress chief.
"The incident was unfortunate and it should not have happened with her (Ms Banerjee) and that too in the Planning Commission... Delhi police are responsible for it," Mr Singh told PTI.
Mr Singh said Delhi police should have taken adequate steps to ensure Ms Banerjee's safety as she is chief minister.
The incident took place on Tuesday at Planning Commission office when she was heckled by the Left-wing Student Federation of India (SFI) activists and the West Bengal finance minister Amit Mitra accompanying her was manhandled.
"The incident was unfortunate and it should not have happened with her (Ms Banerjee) and that too in the Planning Commission... Delhi police are responsible for it," Mr Singh told PTI.
