A Delhi court today deferred the bail application of former law minister Jitender Singh Tomar, who was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly faking his degrees and has been in police custody since.
The court said it was not in a position to take a call on the plea since it was not in possession of the relevant documents. The investigating officer and the accused are both out of Delhi.
The matter, it said, will be heard on June 16, when Mr Tomar's police custody expires.
The court also refused to grant him any interrim relief, saying, "Interim bail now will further complicate entire issue. The same is not appropriate".
Mr Tomar, who has been charged with cheating and forgery, is expected to be taken to Bihar today, where the police will visit the Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University for a spot verification.
The 49-year-old legislator had claimed that he got his law degree from the Bishwanath Singh Institute of Legal Study College, Munger, which is affiliated to the University.
In its internal inquiry, the university had found that the certificate number Mr Tomar claims to have, had been allotted to another student.
Yesterday, the police had taken him to the Avadh University in Faizabad, from where Mr Bharti claimed to have got his Bachelor of Science degree. The University, however, said Mr Bharti had never been its student.
The police are also investigating whether Mr Tomar's allegedly fake certificates are part of a larger racket.
