One of the four men being tried for the murder and gang-rape of a Delhi student will be allowed to attend the funeral service of his brother, Ram Singh, the alleged mastermind of the case who hung himself in Tihar Jail earlier this month.
The police will accompany Mukesh to Rajasthan on March 26 for the ceremony to be held next day.
On the night of December 16, Ram Singh allegedly decided to take the school bus that he drove for a living out at night with a group of friends. Among them was Mukesh, who was the designated driver for the evening.
The police has said in court that the men - six in total, including a 17-year-old - had decided to find a woman to rape. They saw a young girl and her male companion waiting at a bus stop in south Delhi and pretended to be running a chartered bus, used commonly in Delhi as public transport.
The police and the woman's friend say the couple was assaulted with an iron rod, the student was gang-raped, and was then thrown onto the road with her friend, naked and bleeding.
She died two weeks later of the egregiously severe injuries inflicted upon her.
The attack and the massive Indian protests that followed made international headlines. Earlier this month, Ram Singh was discovered hanging in prison. The police has been unable to explain how his three cell-mates did not waken as he constructed a noose from his shirt and parts of his carpet, and then stepped onto a bucket to hang himself from the ceiling.
