New Delhi:
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has reportedly pulled up Delhi government for not responding to a letter on Afzal Guru's mercy petition.
The ministry has written to the Delhi government on the Afzal Guru mercy petition, which has been pending with the government since 2006.
A similar notice was sent last year in August 2005 in which the President sought the MHA's views. The MHA, in turn, sought the opinion of the Delhi Government as the comments of the government of the state where the crime has been committed are sought before deciding a mercy petition.
However, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that she was not aware of any letter sent by the Union Home Ministry seeking her government's comments on the mercy petition filed by Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
"I have not received any letter (from Home Ministry). May be the Home Department (of the Delhi government received it),"she told reporters.
Commenting on the issue, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Rajeev Pratap Rudy said, "Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit should inform why Afzal Guru's hanging issue is kept in cold storage for four years. A terrorist friendly atmosphere is being created by this."
BJP state president Vijender Gupta said, "If Delhi government does not take any decision in Afzal Guru's case in 48 hours, BJP will start a dharna outside Sheila Dikshit's residence."
Home Department officials, however, refused to comment. According to the report, the reminder was sent on April 29.
