New Delhi: The Delhi cabinet has approved the proposal to sell onion at 280 locations across the national capital at Rs 40 per kg from August 10.

The food and civil supplies department has made the arrangements. The onions will be sold in packets of 1 kg and will be available at Fair Price Shops and mobile vans.

The department had started preparations since April to counter a possible price rise in the rainy season, stationing teams at Nasik - one of the biggest centres of onion sale -- to procure and store stocks.

The decision to release the stocks at controlled rates now came as the price of the onions shot up to a 2-year high. At the country's largest wholesale onion market of Lasalgaon, onions were selling at Rs 2,550 per 100 kg - a 54% jump.

The Delhi government has said it would keep track of the prices of essential commodities and has warned hoarders of strict action.
