Delhi govt moves to rein in 'non-performing' MCD

New Delhi: With Commonwealth Games just a year away, things have started moving in the capital. The main hurdle - multiplicity of agencies may soon be history as the government has started working of consolidification of powers to Delhi state.

Blame game between the Delhi government and the municipal corporation is common in Delhi for any civic issue of the Capital. But now there is a possibility that it may all change. The Central government has on principle decided to get the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to report to Delhi government.

"The Central government has told us about the decision. Now more work needs to be done on it," said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

But the BJP that is in majority in the municipal council is not very pleased with the possibility of their only seat of power in Delhi being taken away by the state government. They want complete statehood for Delhi before this step is taken.

"This is quite complicated, it's a long procedure. Without amendment nothing can be done," said Subhash Arya, BJP leader, MCD.

The Delhi Cabinet is expected to meet on Monday to discuss the issue. But it may not be a cakewalk for the state government who would after the takeover have fewer excuses they can make for non-performance.
