Delhi Mayor apologises for traffic jams

New Delhi: With normal life thrown out of gear in the city due to widespread waterlogging and massive traffic jams caused by heavy rains, Delhi Mayor Kanwar Sain on Tuesday said he "regretted" the suffering caused to the citizens.

At the same time, he dismissed suggestions that the waterlogging was due to the failure of the Municipal Corporation Of Delhi (MCD) in de-silting city drains.

"As the first citizen of Delhi, I regret it that the people had to suffer during the rains last evening. I will personally supervise the operation to bring back the situation to normal", he said.

He said he has instructed all the MCD zonal commissioners to visit the affected sites in their respective areas to do the needful.

Heavy rains caused waterlogging across the city and traffic snarls inconveniencing commuters.

Sain, however, said he was convinced that de-silting has been conducted satisfactorily in 98 per cent of the drains.

"There are different reasons for waterlogging in different areas. In many parts of the city Metro and other agencies are undertaking construction work. This is preventing the water from flowing to the drains", he said.
