Delhi Rain Updates: Severe waterlogging was witnessed in several places.

Delhi Rain LIVE Updates: Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced that all schools in the national capital, both government and private, will remain closed today in view of heavy rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that clouds had converged over Delhi from all directions, prompting an advisory for residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

Delhi and its adjoining National Capital Region (NCR) on Wednesday evening witnessed heavy rain providing relief from the humid weather. However, the downpour resulted in traffic congestion throughout the city.

Waterlogging was reported in several places. Several airlines have issued advisories about flights being diverted or asking passengers to leave early and check the status of their flights. 

According to the IMD, intermittent showers are likely in Delhi till August 5.

Delhi Woman, Son Die After Fall Into Open Drain, She Held Him Even In Death
In a heartbreaking incident that yet again raises questions over civic negligence endangering Delhi residents' lives, a 23-year-old woman and her three-year-old son died after falling in a drain during the downpour in the national capital last evening.

Tanuja Bisht had gone to the weekly market in Ghazipur with her three-year-old Priyansh and was on her way back when it started raining. The road was waterlogged, and Tanuja fell into an open drain with her son. Hours later, the two bodies were recovered about 500 m away, the mother still clutching her son's hand.

The woman's family members have said the mother and son could have been saved if the rescue operation was swift. Her husband Govind Singh, who works in a private firm in Noida, was at work when disaster struck.

More rains expected in Delhi
More rains are expected in Delhi today, the meteorological department has forecast, a day after heavy showers inundated large parts of the city, choking key stretches with unending traffic and leaving people stranded as roads resembled rivers.

The Salwan station in East Delhi's Mayur Vihar area recorded 147.5 mm rainfall from 8.30 am on Wednesday till 7.15 am on Thursday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The Najafgarh station recorded 113 mm rainfall and the Lodhi Road, Delhi University and Safdarjung observatories recorded 107.5 mm, 104.5 mm, and 105.6 mm rainfall respectively, it said.

In a post on X, the Delhi Police has asked commuters to avoid the Mundka as there is heavy waterlogging in the area.

Delhi Schools To Remain Shut Today After Heavy Rain And Waterlogging
Several houses collapsed in parts of Delhi and one person was reported trapped in Chandni Chowk's Sadar Bazar after the national capital saw heavy rain on Wednesday evening. With the weather office saying that clouds have converged over the city "from all four sectors", at least 10 flights headed to Delhi, including one from Tokyo, were diverted, and vehicles were also stuck on flooded roads in some areas. Read more

  • Taking to her official handle on microblogging site X, Atishi posted on Wednesday, "In light of the very heavy rainfall today evening and the forecast of heavy rainfall tomorrow, all schools--government and private--will remain closed tomorrow."
  • Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi also posted on her X handle and said that all schools under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will remain closed on August 1 in view of the forecast of adverse weather conditions.
